Why is POR vs. LAL a rivalry?
So I started watching basketball (or at least remembering) in 1987 at age 8. In this time the only significant battle between the two teams (which I can remember)was the WCF where the Lakers came storming back in the 4th. I wouldnt really consider it a rivalry if that moment and the sheer hatred of the Lakers is all you have in justifying it as a rivalry. Even though Kobe says for it to be a rivalry both teams must win,i disagree and say the Kings were a great rivalry 2000-2002.
I didn't do any research before this thread so I could be totally forgetting about something big.
Why do you consider it a rivalry besides the hate? Im looking forward to some great answers...

you just really answered your own question with a question. I mean what else really makes a rivalry besides hate? Myself I am not a Lakers hater nor do I consider it a rivalry but most Blazers fans still hate the Lakers. I'll be honest I don't like Kobe but I love watching him play for some reason.

Re: Why is POR vs. LAL a rivalry?
I don't know that I'd call it a rivalry. For it to be a rivalry, both teams have to meet up fairly regularly when they're at the top of their games and contending for a chance to win a title. That happened in the early 90's and in 2000, but since then the Blazers have been in rebuilding mode. I think it has the chance to become a legitimate rivalry in the next few seasons as the Blazers are set to really start to make an impact at the same time as the Lakers have regrouped with a solid core of players around Kobe.
As a fan, I know that there's no team in the league I enjoy seeing the Blazers beat than the Lakers. It's a combination of factors: Kobe's general arrogance, the glitz factor, the undeniable fact of the Lakers' longterm success, and maybe a bit of a sense of entitlement in Laker fans in general (present company included.) It's going to be fun kicking the Lakers off of their perch in a few years.

If you look back in the old days , Portland and LA had huge battles. All the way back to Walton vs Jabbar. The teams in the early 90's battled each other in the playoffs a lot as well. You also have...
1.The big city, little city thing.
2.LA seems to get players for nothing...Gasol comes to mind. Portland has always seemed to have to catch up to that.
3.LA players get a lot of calls, or it's percieved they do anyway.
4.No one likes a rapist....er alleged rapists
5. And like it or not, LA being a big city that is always on tv brings a lot of hatred....as do the Yankees, Cowboys, Braves, Raiders, Celtics.
I hate LA, I hate their piss yellow uniforms, their sense of entitlement and all of their players.

Re: Why is POR vs. LAL a rivalry?
Yea, they both hate each other.
Also, no matter what, both teams come to play when they play each other. No matter how banged up, or how bad your team is that year, or how good the other is, they will usually be close, physical games.
Also, the fans hate the opposing team's fans and team players. It will always be sold out for a Laker game.
Through the years, Portland and LA have had a rivalry for sure. 70s with Walton, early 90s and 2000.
Also, with this rivalry, think...
Oden - Bynum
Aldridge - Gasol
Roy - Bryant

Re: Why is POR vs. LAL a rivalry?
Watch the movie "Airplane!" for Jabbar's rant against Walton. That movie may have done more to fuel the rivalry past the 1970's than anything before the 1991 WCF's.

Re: Why is POR vs. LAL a rivalry?
The funny thing is, a lot of teams think they have a "rivalry" with the Lakers, but the Lakers only really consider the Celtics a rivalry -
The Kings think they have a rivalry with the Lakers
We do too
So does Houston
So do the Suns
And probably Dallas too
But the Lakers never think twice about these teams. That cracks me up.

It is pretty much about the arrogance you just demonstrated in your post. Until the showtime era, the Lakers has always been a blue collar team. Then with Riley and crew the arrogance and entitlement blossomed. When Phil Jackson came abord with Shaq and Kobe the arrogance level was taken to an all time high. Mean while, every other team in the west has been perceived as the blue collar team, and Portland has certainly been the epitomy of a blue collar team. In a word, ARROGANCE.
