Nice analysis.

Mavs may not have KP, but I think they have some quality scouts or whoever makes those decisions.

To me it seems like their draft picks are usally better than expected, considering where they got drafted. I always get burned on this stuff because I type at the top of my head without looking it up, but Howard, Daniels, Barea and Bass come to mind. Weren't these late round draft picks by the Mavs.

Where I see Dallas' flaw (if you consider a trip to the championship and three impressive records in the last three years having flaws) is they bite on the big name hype players. I don't think Cuban can stop himself when big name players are obtainable. Terry, Dampier, Stackhouse, Kidd.

Maybe Cuban should work on getting draft picks and letting that scouting team do their thing????

I don't see why that's the statement, or why it is classless. I think it makes a lot of sense - it gives Avery the maximum chance to find a new job for next year, and it gives Cuban the maximum chance to find a good replacement. Why wait?

To me, the statement is that Cuban had made up his mind to fire Avery, and he got it done at the first opportunity. That's good management, not bad.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired

Now who ever decided to trade for Jason Kidd, now that is who ought to be fired. But you know how it is. Every GM gets the "2 Coach" pad before they are fired themselves for doing a bad job. Team doing bad? Fire the coach, even though it's your personnel that are the problem. They keep doing bad? Fire the next coach. Bad after that, your fired. Then you hope they do good so you can take credit for building the team and get another job.

Re: OT: Avery Johnson Fired

I think Cuban needs to focus more on his scouts in his organization. These scouts are the ones who are checking out college players, D-leaguers, and international players. I think Cuban is focusing too much on big name players and not focusing on the whole core of his team and what positions need to be improved. I do agree that his move on Johnson was too harsh, not classy, and no explanation of his dismissal. Johnson did his best efforts on a team that had talent but couldn't pull through. If you take a look at the espn poll, 67% thought it was wrong that Johnson was fired.

Re: OT: Avery Johnson Fired

I can't say that I'm surprised this happened, but I don't think Dallas problems were the result of Johnson's coaching.

Malik Allen
Jose juan Barea
Devean George (he might have one more year 2mil, conflicting data)
Juan Howard
Eddie Jones
Tyronn Lue
Jamaal Magloire
Antoine Wright

So all or most of those players could be let go, resigned to small contract (since they suck) or be signed and traded.

Then they have a cheap good player
Brandon Bass - 826 thousand left

Then they have two "star" players who many teams would bid for if they were on the block (even Howard would get pursued)
Dirk - 57 mil over next 3 years
Howard - 33 mil over next 3 years

Then they have several overpaid but useful players, would not get much in a trade but useful to have and since Cuban is willing to spend, he can keep them to fill out his roster
Jason Terry - 41mil over next 4 years
Erick Dampiere - 36mil over next 3 years
Jerry Stackhouse - 14mil over next 2 years

And then they have the Kidds large expiring contract of 21mil

I think there is a lot that Cuban can do if he is willing to make some trades. He is going to lose a lot of value on Kidd, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Kidd has shown that he is not worth what Dallas paid for him, but as an expiring contract, even he could be moved for something. Especially if Cuban is willing to do what Allen did with Steve Francis where he takes back a bad player and just cuts him and eats some money. Dirk and Howard could get a lot of talent, especially Dirk. I think they have a chance to be just fine next year, but there are so many issues that need to be taken care of and I don't think they have anyone as good as Pritchard to find the right talent.
I don't know, they've made some pretty good draft picks the past couple years. Devin Harris, Josh Howard were great picks. Brandon Bass is turning into a pretty dang good player as well. Someone in managements making good decisions, I'm not sure if its Donnie Nelson or not.

Which is interesting because if somebody is drafting so well, how could they possibly be making some of the free agent and trade decisions that have happened the last few years. Or is is the owner, who can't keep his fingers off the team, F'n it up. It makes no sense, unless the owner is the one F'n up the team from the outside. There is no way the person making the decisions on who to draft is the same one making the decisions to let Nash go, or to trade for Kidd.

That's exactly why I asked the question in the other thread ... does Dallas even have a GM? I assume so, but I'll be darned if I've ever heard mention of it.

Yep I believe that the GM is Donnie Nelson.
