OT: Avery Johnson Fired
Avery Johnson is fired, just saw it on the sports ticker on ESPN. I wonder what coach will be next for the Mavs, if the Suns and Nuggets also fire their coaches things will really get interesting with so many openings. I wonder if these 3 teams will try to trade players and fill holes.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
That didn't take long....
Good. I'm looking forward to taking the Mavs (or the Suns, or the Nuggets) place in the playoffs next season. It's going to be enjoyable to watch these three teams either get blown up, or just flat out lose more than us. Next year. I can't wait.

whether the Nugs or Mavs get blown up or not doesn't really matter to the Blazers playoff chances IMO... I expect Portland to blow by them
The Suns chances went down with Grant Hill's groin pull. I could see them being a real tough team next season.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
Wow.. talk about teams already blowing themselves up just a day after being eliminated. This is marking the end of Phoenix, Dallas and probably Denver as well, while the Blazers rise up to take their spot.
This is incredible... Avery though will probably himself on the bench somewhere next season.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
Well I doubt that the Suns fire their coach. I could see Denver doing it, but in truth, the issues are not the coaches as much as how management put together the Nugs. Avery I never thought was a good head coach. I think he got lucky at first because his team was so damn talented.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
I honestly don't think any coach could've worked with that team. When Dirk is your star and your next best players are JT, Kidd, and Howard, your team isn't that good. They had their chances the last two years but choked.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
Firing him within 24 hours of losing a playoff game is quite a statement. And that statement is "i don't like you and have no respect for you". Personally I think it was a classless move by Cuban.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
I'm not as convinced as others that it is all downhill for the mavs from here on out. They still have Cuban who will do anything to improve the team.
Without studying the Mavs, I'm guessing they are locked into a lot of bad contracts . . . but if possible, I could see Cuban trying to pull a Celtics move and bring in as many star as possible for the instant gratification.
Basically Mavs have deep pockets and an aggressive owner . . . so don't count them out too quickly.

Re: Avery Johnson Fired
Dallas has its share of good, bad and ugly
First off, the following players all have contracts that end now, and are off the books unless re-signed
Malik Allen
Jose juan Barea
Devean George (he might have one more year 2mil, conflicting data)
Juan Howard
Eddie Jones
Tyronn Lue
Jamaal Magloire
Antoine Wright
So all or most of those players could be let go, resigned to small contract (since they suck) or be signed and traded.
Then they have a cheap good player
Brandon Bass - 826 thousand left
Then they have two "star" players who many teams would bid for if they were on the block (even Howard would get pursued)
Dirk - 57 mil over next 3 years
Howard - 33 mil over next 3 years
Then they have several overpaid but useful players, would not get much in a trade but useful to have and since Cuban is willing to spend, he can keep them to fill out his roster
Jason Terry - 41mil over next 4 years
Erick Dampiere - 36mil over next 3 years
Jerry Stackhouse - 14mil over next 2 years
And then they have the Kidds large expiring contract of 21mil
I think there is a lot that Cuban can do if he is willing to make some trades. He is going to lose a lot of value on Kidd, but there is nothing he can do about that now. Kidd has shown that he is not worth what Dallas paid for him, but as an expiring contract, even he could be moved for something. Especially if Cuban is willing to do what Allen did with Steve Francis where he takes back a bad player and just cuts him and eats some money. Dirk and Howard could get a lot of talent, especially Dirk. I think they have a chance to be just fine next year, but there are so many issues that need to be taken care of and I don't think they have anyone as good as Pritchard to find the right talent.
