We need a defensive guard
I am not saying the we should for sure draft westbrook. However, seeing how CP3 deron williams, and tony parker are dominating the western confrence interms of point gurads are concerned I really think we need someone who can slow them down. I like the ball in roys hands most of the time but he is far to slow to guard fast point guards. The knock on westbrook is that he cain't shoot that well. If he has a solid shooting during workouts I say he is the perfect fit. Yet do we need to get any younger? THe perfect fit woulde a defensive guard who can knock down a shot or too. Like monta ellis but with more defense. Any thoughts?

I think we should go after Andre Miller. He would be a perfect fit.

Andre Miller is 32. I hope we draft Westbrook.

Westbrook is the answer for Portland. It's not even funny.

You can still draft Westbrook (or whatever point guard you feel we should draft). We could still go after Miller. Were going to be competing and most likely a playoff team next year. Draft that point guard, have him sit behind Miller until he's ready. In the meantime, we have a proven point guard, who is a good defensive player and we can play him until washed up and then insert the point guard of the future.

Quality post. Want to expand on that thought?
A lot of people seem to think we need a PG that can guard other PGs on defense, is defensive-minded, and doesn't need to dominate the ball on offense.

My biggest problem with this is I think it would cost too much to rent Miller for the next few years. Also, I don't think we can get Wesbrook at 13. If you could get Miller for something reasonable (Raef, Frye+Jack) and then move up to get Westbrook (#13 + 2nd rounder + $3M) then I think this would work really well.
(big) But, you are talking about prying away the starting point guard on a playoff team. I just don't see that happening. I think Iggy would also freak if they traded Miller--and I don't think the Sixers want that. It would probably be easier to get Kidd.

Re: We need a defensive guard
I assume you guys are talking about Russell Westbrook (Soph) from UCLA ?
Even if he went pro, we'll definitely trade wafer and possibly J.Jack as a deal.
That way we have room for Rudy Fernandez.
Lineup:
L.Aldridge PF
S.Blake PG
C.Frye PF / C
J.Jones PF
R.LaFrentz C
J.McRoberts PF
G.Oden C
T.Outlaw SF
J.Przy C
S.Rodriguez PG
B.Roy SG
M.Webster SF
R.Fernandez SG
R.Westbook PG
some other player to fill the gap.

Roy is a ball controlling shooting guard. He will have the ball 90% of the game, and Westbrook can take it after that. Portland needs a defender, because Roy can't do it all. He's not quick enough for some of the franchise guards these days.

Re: We need a defensive guard
nothing against us drafting westbrook, but i dont think that he is the perfect fit for our team at PG.
Yes, he is probably the best fit of players in the draft within our realm of draft picking in the first round, but i think what we need most is an assist machine with defense as a secondary attribute. With Greg, LaMarcus, and joel in the post i can see us fudging on the quality of defense on the perimeter and backing off teams and daring them to make the outside shot because no team in the league will want to bother coming into the post consistently.
With that said, Westbrook does make the most sense out of players in the draft, however i think we would be best off trying to find a quick guard that is more offensive minded in feeding the ball to our bigs and brandon.
This leads me to think that the blazers might try to pursue someone like Mike Conley or one of Toronto's guards. Perhaps Andre Miller but he is too old for our timeframe.
If Memphis gets a top 2 pick, look for Portland to make a bid for conley.

Re: We need a defensive guard
Mike Conley is an awesome fit as well, but still unsure if it's likely.

I think any of the Memphis point guards would be interesting to look at, especially if they end up picking Rose, in which case they'd have to jettison one of them. Lowry isn't a natural distributor, but he can get to the line with ease and has the tools to be a good defender (he has a high steals rate and has good speed and strength). He's also as strong rebounder. His forays to the basket lead to turnovers, but he's not nearly as egregious as Jack in this aspect. He's basically played as efficiently or better than Jack ever has, and he's two years younger.
Conley has also shown flashes, although he did struggle a lot this season. Obviously, his experience playing with Oden could ease his transition into the NBA next season, but neither of these guys is the answer if you're looking for someone to be a consistent contributor now rather than later.
