I grew up in Winston-Salem so I watch a lot of Wake. Paul was heralded as an all time great Deacon talent prior to his first game. He was clearly incredible day 1 as a freshman and I don't think it was any great scouting ability on my part recognizing how much he was dominating the ACC. He measured out better then I expected at the pre-draft, posted a 40" vert. and blew doors on the running drills. Guys with his ballhandling, passing, & shooting skills + physical measureables don't enter the draft very often.

I still think it's really hard to put "sure thing" on any rookie though. Will Oden be a "sure thing" in three years?

I think Greg is likely to be the greatest Blazer ever. The only center I've been more impressed by in college was Hakeem. Like CP, it didn't take a bunch of games for me to project Greg as a special talent. I'm expecting the next 10+ years to be pretty fun.

Re: I curse you John Nash
for those saying if portland drafted Paul, they wouldn't have Aldridge, Roy, or Oden, I say you're only 1/3 right and 2/3 wrong
Paul was ROY his first season, but he still had some flaws to his game. Furthermore, that season portland was terrible and a rokkie PG wasn't going to make that much difference. He wasn't that much better then the blake-telfaire-jack combo that season. Better, but not by a lot.
And he wouldn't have kept portland from going on that tailspin at the end of the season.
And you also have to remember how much Zach dominated the ball...paul wasn't going to change zach's personality.
So then you have to remember that portland had the worst record in the league in paul's rookie season, yet only ended up with the 4th pick in the lottery. He might have pulled them up to 3rd worst record and they still might have had the 4th pick. And KP would have made the same moves in that draft.
So portland WOULD have had Paul, Roy, and Aldridge last season. Obviously, they would have been better, but still would have ended up in the lottery. Maybe 10th-13th position. Maybe portland would have drafted Noah. Or maybe...just maybe...Oden's fate was to be a blazer and portland would have really defied the odds.
In any event, Nash not drafting paul was a career-ending screw-up. And it should have been.

Probably not Aldridge either, or maybe Roy, but certainly not both LMA and Roy.

Was not drafting Paul or Williams a mistake? Yes
Do we know what our roster would look like right now had we drafted one of them? No
Do we know what our roster looks like right now? Yes
Am I happy with our current roster? Hell Yes

Oden was "luck" for the 5th-worst team in that lottery. That is how the numbers landed regardless of if Portland was in that spot or otherwise.
I have to think that a team with Paul and either Roy or LMA would been better than the 5th worst team in the NBA in 06-07.

one of the worst thing to wish for your worst enemy.
you think any team will be stupid enough to hire that moron again? to think some blazer fans actually praised him and called him a "genius".

Re: I curse you John Nash
So we can all agree that John Nash did a fantastic job of bringing us Greg Oden, albeit accidentally. Why let our luck end there? Bring back Nash. If we can continue to obtain bad draft positions, a bountiful plethora of benefits may seem like an endless multitude of Odens.
