Did you have a chance to watch Mayo this year much? I saw him in several games (living in SoCal) and his ability to get his shot off was top shelf. He has a lot to learn, but he could get that shot off against NBA defenders right now and he can fill up the scoring column quickly when he is feeling it. A lot will depend on which team he goes to. If he can get some serious minutes, and has a coach who doesn't mind his turnovers, I think he will surprise a lot of people.

Yeah I have the Fox package, so I watched most of the Pac 10 Hoop games. And I agree with your analysis of his game. And I would love to have him on the Blazers playing with Roy. But if he plays PG then his coach WILL mind his turn overs and therefore will have limited minutes his first year. Which is why I say he is a year away. I just don't think he is anywhere ready to run a NBA team.

Re: 2009 Roy
Beasley.
Oden is facing some large hurdles. 1) The knee has to get healthy; 2) He has to get back into game shape; 3) He hasn't actually played basketball in a year! With only very limited drills under his belt, there is bound to be some rust.
If the big guy has a great first season - good for him. If he struggles - that's not a huge surprise. I just hope the fans don't turn on him when he shows himself to be merely mortal.

Re: 2009 Roy
I think it'll take a few months for Oden to get back into the swing of things. Towards the All-Star break Oden will show why we took him #1 over Durant. Just like at Ohio State, I wasn't impressed with him and when he got healthier he looked great. The National title game Oden was fully healthy and literally looked like a young Shaq. Let him recalibrate himself and he'll be fine.
PG is the hardest position to learn in the NBA. Rose is an athletic beast but he's no Chris Paul. Beasley days of overpowering his opponents are over. I think he'll be a volume 20 ppg scorer a lot like Durant this coming season.

Which ever player gets picked by Miami. I still don't think The Senator will put up huge #'s! Hope I'm wrong.

Defensive players don't win ROY. Oden has almost no chance, his offensive game is just too far away.

Dude isn't Mutombo. Did you happen to see the preseason videos of him with the right and left hooks or read about him refining his jumper throughout this season? How about that he shot 80% from the FT line as a HS senior (when he was last shooting them with his right)? I'm pretty sure he'll be averaging around the 16 points per he got at OSU without his right hand plus get a ton of blocks and boards. I'm also expecting the Blazers to continue their ascent in the standings and end up in the playoffs... thats not going to hurt his hype.
Here's guessing the ROY is won in a landslide

i'm really perplexed as to why some fans keep spewing this nonsense. dude averaged 15.7 pts during his freshman year, shooting a high percentage while playing with his dominant hand in a cast. he also led his team to the finals of the ncaa tournament.
his 15.7 pts/game as a freshman is comparable to the likes of hakeem, shaq, ewing. did any of them had troubles scoring in the nba?

if your going to say Odens high school and college offensive stats are going to translate to the NBA you might as well say Kevin Durrant is going to be a much better rebounder than Oden too, since he was in college.
Oden may not be Mutumbo, but I'd sure as hell isn't Shaq or Duncan either. Or even Howard for that matter.

what part of oden's game on offense that you don't think will translate in the nba? excuse me if i don't find your "well see, look, durant's rebounding didn't translate to the nba and so oden's offense won't either" logic convincing. afraid you'll have to do better than that.

Re: 2009 Roy
e . . . nice softball question for the Blazer board. As if we all aren't geeked enough about next season and Oden, you come along and bait us with "so who do you think will be ROY next year?"
Is it pre-season yet?

why shouldn't I expect Oden's HS free throw shooting to be an indication of what sort of FT shooter he'll be in the pros? How is that shot any different from one level to the next? I think his offense arsenal will be much better then it was in college because dude won't be primarily using his off hand... Durant didn't have this sort of dynamic working for him. Seriously flawed deduction process you've got going
