high school players not ready for NBA?

What a joke! I know guys like Kobe and TMAC are exceptions to the rule, but it's kinda' interesting that 4 of the 5 members on the All-NBA 1st team didn't attend college. I know there have probably been more failures then success stories, but don't tell me these guys aren't ready. Anybody who thinks they are ready should be able to make the jump! 2 other HS guys-Amare and TMAC also made one of the 3 teams. Hockey, Baseball,Tennis,Soccer all do it! SCREW COLLEGE!

I don't believe in the phrase "screw College," but I do believe in giving people a choice.

I like the 1 year college rule, as it helps more people than it hurts, imo.

The 2 year rule is stupid as hell, imo.

what's the principle behind your reasoning?

i personally don't like the 1 year college rule at all. as a fan that watches college basketball, i love it. but i don't believe in holding people back from their chance to get paid.

Re: high school players not ready for NBA?

well, i think most will benefit from one year in college. Playing vs. college competition will prove if they are worth a lotto pick or not. Its much more tough to judge playing vs. high school level competition. Players will also get much better from playing a year in college.

But 2 years is kinda lame. I feel that pretty much anything important could be accomplished in 1 year.

Re: high school players not ready for NBA?

for every kobe there's a leon smith. and with these high school kids, there is so much banking on them from teams, to companies and to families. you don't think for a second that kobe, tmac and garnett had some help along the way from their respective shoe companies as well as the league promoting them? i'm in the belief that anybody could fair pretty well in the league given the right opportunities. i mean, look at jermaine oneal. when he was buried on the bench, he was pretty crappy. throw him into the fire and he exploded... ok exploded was the wrong word. more like he became better than average. and now look at him again, he's pretty crappy again. my point? i didn't have one. i'm still drunk rambling and going to work will be fun right about now....

Ok, so how is this ratio different from the ratio of guys drafted who did go to college and who are busts? Sure you get to scout them more, but taking a look at the ratio of guys who came straight out of high school and into the nba and how many made it, and then comparing it to the number of guys who went to school, and how many made it in the NBA, a higher percentage of those players make it and have careers.

Now I would also point this out. I work in computers, I never went to college for it. I see young people straight out of college all the time who went to school for computers enter the field, and it is so obvious they are inexperienced and not very good (yet) at what they do until they get their feet wet for a few years. Yet I can tell you when I started working in computers, I was better at it than a vast majority of the folks who learned their skills in school. Would it make sense for a company to say they wouldn't hire me because I didn't go to college for it? I guess you can say it is their perogative, but really it is not right. In the same vein, I can say that there are guys who come straight out of high school who are better than guys that went to school. That is a fact.

I think what it really comes down to is, a lot of people don't like seeing young men make a buttload of money at such a young age, and they are jealous. I say this is america. Live it up, and cheer for people who are making their own lives great, and not at the cost of others.

Jermaine O'Neal "BLEW UP" because he practiced everyday against Sabonis, Sheed and Brian Grant. I've been told by some people that he regularly out played those guys in practice, but didn't get any run 'cause coach loved his vets.

For every player drafted out of college there's 2 or 3 that suck, so I don't like the"For every Kobe there's a Leon Smith" argument.

Re: high school players not ready for NBA?

The issue is not that fans and teams want to keep these talented individuals from earning money for their livelihood, it's that they get the same guaranteed three year contract at 19 as four year college players do at 22.
Many have suggested that all players under 22 shouldn't have guaranteed contracts to weed out the busts early on, but what really needs to happen is for every NBA team to have an NBDL team of its own to send them until they are ready to play with the big boys. Imagine if Outlaw was able to play 40 minutes a night for the Stampede for his first two years- that would probably have sped up his development. The same could be said for Sergio due to his relative youth and inexperience.
Both the Lakers and the Spurs have their own exclusive farm teams that aren't shared- why hasn't Paul Allen bought one yet?
