A quick thought on Harris...

It seems to be the general consensus around here that now that Devin Harris is a Net, he'll stay a net. Obviously this thinking has some merit to it. Harris is a good young pg and those aren't exactly falling off trees. The Nets traded a cornerstone of their franchise for him, so that could very well be the case. I have no evidence to suggest anything other than that.

I DO however, have a theory that it MAY not be that open and shut. First of all, the Nets appear to be in rebuild mode. Yeah they're talking about getting Camby and Melo, but I just don't see anything that big happening. I think the Nets are more likely to ship VC and RJ off for the best packages of young players/picks that they can get and rebuild a young core to move to Brooklyn. While Harris would certainly be a solid piece of that young core, it could be difficult for the Nets to pass up an opportunity to add several talented young players, a lotto pick and/or a huge expiring contract.

Secondly, if you're to believe the trade-deadline rumors (again, no facts, just "hunches"), NJ didn't appear to be in love w/ Harris and seemed to be interested in several of our players. Add to the fact that they have the 10th pick, they could either package the 2 together for a guy like Bayless if he's their guy OR take the next best pg in Augustin and use our pick on another solid piece.

Finally, there's the issue of Marcus Williams who was showing to be a pretty solid young PG behind Kidd. I believe that it's at least possible that the Nets traded for Harris simply knowing that he was the most valuable asset that they could get, and not neccessarily w/ the intention of making him their franchise PG.

Obviously from our side he's a great defensive pg, very quick and can get into the lane whenever he wants, great handle, decent J, good floor general, signed to a very nice deal for us, and would be a VERY solid piece at a need position for us.

So the question is, if you're New Jersey and you're in rebuild mode. Don't you at least have to think about an offer like Outlaw, Jack, the 13 and other assets (Raef's contract, Martell, frye, blake, sergio, 2nd rounders, future 1st rounders, our euros minus Rudy, etc.) for Harris? While I'm certainly blinded by fandom to some degree, I have to think that the quickest way to rebuild is to turn one quality asset into several, and thats exactly what we could offer them.

Re: A quick thought on Harris...

One thing I've learned while watching Rod Thorn is that he's a fatherless *******. With all the time spent next to Stern, I'm sure it rubbed off. Thorn is a hard man to deal with, and has been for the Blazers specifically for some time now. It just seems we are so close to pulling something off with them and he ruins it just because he wants to. I think the biggest thing is figuring out RJ or Vince Carter's role on the team. Do they want to do a salary dump? If so, good for us. I'll take either one, RJ preferrably so I could get Harris. I would give up pretty much any combination of players outside the big 3, and perhaps off limits on Rudy as well to get Harris. I wouldn't mind over-paying either, we have assetts up the ying yang. I'd hope an offer of Raef, Outlaw, Jack, 13th pick, some 2nd rounders, maybe Webster or Frye could intrigue them.

Looking at it for them, they would be down grading in overall quality and opting for quantity, which isn't something that happens too often.

Re: A quick thought on Harris...

Yeah, certainly the right scenario would have to take place in order for Harris to ACTUALLY be available, but when is that NOT the case when trades are successfully made? I think its at least worth thinking about or taking into consideration...

Re: A quick thought on Harris...

I like Harris and try to casually follow what is going on with him.

Apparently Kiki has publically stated that the plan is the Nets will be building around Harris. Doesn't sound like Harris will be going anywhere.
