Re: Rudy Fernandez = Drazen Petrovic II?

if he doesn't feel like he's getting the minutes he "deserves", could he go back to spain? he'd be able to get a new contract, even bigger than the one he's walking away from.

Re: Rudy Fernandez = Drazen Petrovic II?

as noted, we'd just added a quality veteran in Danny Ainge who was getting 32 mpg. plus, we were a .768 team contending for a championship that year. as good as Drazen was, he was trapped in Jermaine O'Neal rookie limbo.

this season is entirely different. Roy's the only person among our guards who is likely substantially better than Rudy. we're loaded with youth and are nowhere near contending yet.

and let's also think back to how the original Dream Tream annihilated all comers in 1992. being the best player in Europe in 2008 means a hell of a lot more than being the best player in Europe in 1990. I'm not saying Rudy will be better than Drazen, but I will say Rudy has been proven against much better competition.

Re: Rudy Fernandez = Drazen Petrovic II?

leaving aside the 'who is the best player in europe' argument, i don't know if i agree with the best payer in europe today being better than 1990. europe has been picked over extensively. in 1990, a much higher percentage of top-level european performers were on the other side of the atlantic.

Certainly Roy is much more of a PG then Clyde was. Also, Petro was pretty slow of foot and only capable of guarding opposing SGs. Clyde was too light to guard most starting 3s and had no business on opposing PGs. While both Rudy and Roy are natural SGs, both should be much better then Clyde and Petro at guarding opposing PGs. Basically I see them as a much better match.

Yah, I hate it when people admit they were wrong about something. Good point.

Feel better?

interesting point. I hadn't thought of it that way.

I don't really know the answer, as there's a much, much larger pool of talent now in Europe than there was back then too.

it's kind of like how people argue that NBA expansion waters down the talent pool. if the number of teams grow by 30% but the US population grows by 40%, is there really a watering down?

Tread carefully. Don't want to trade him for the modern day equivalent of Walter Davis!

True, we don't have that solid back=court of Terry and Clyde..but he essentially plays the same position as Roy, no?

From Fernandez:

"They have pushed hard for me to join them and have assured me I will be an important figure for them"

BUT...what if he doesn't get more than 10-12 minutes per game? Then what? What if we trade for a good or vet PG? his PT decreases right?
That Blazer team Drazen was on was winning 60 games per season. That was one sick team.

Look at the guard rotation:

Porter: Peak Prime age 27, PER 22!

Drexler: Peak Prime age 28, PER 22

Ainge: End Prime age 31, Champion, PER 17

Danny Young: Prime age 28, role player, did what Drazen couldn't, from the bench defend PG's, run the offense, hit the 3.

Drazen had a PER 15. He wasn't bad for the team, but he was far less effiecent than the the big three, that season due to a shooting slump. In other circumstances he would have got heavy minutes off the bench. There was just no room for him on one of the best teams in the NBA.

The Ainge factor did him in. The team messed up and should have handled this better and they ended up selling "low".
