Re: Vet PG
So here's my thinking:
Blake's a pretty solid PG. Roy's going to almost certainly be playing more PG than he did last season. If the team (particularly the second unit) runs more consistently than they did in the last half of last season, Rodriguez has a lot more value on the court even if he's still got the same defensive issues and lack of a shot. It seems likely enough that Pritchard will figure out how to add someone like Westbrook or Lawson through the draft. Thus, it seems to me that the PG situation will be better next year than this last year almost regardless.
Then there's the addition of Oden and the addition of Fernandez. Combine that with even modest improvement at PG and I think the team will make another leap forward, at least cracking into the playoffs. Could more happen with the addition of a Davis or Arenas? Certainly. But the risk/reward ratio scares me, at least for this next season. The season after, though, I could maybe see it. Such a player would be coming in being Quite Clear that he's joining not a team on the rise so much as a team that's already risen and he's got the chance to be the "final piece." I think at that point fewer waves get made and, even if they do, they'll matter less because by then it will more firmly be the team of Roy, Oden, and company, in their own minds as much as anywhere else.
And all that said, I'm not strictly opposed to adding a veteran PG this summer. I just don't want it to be someone who's already got a reputation as a difficult player when things aren't going well.

Re: Vet PG
i agree with you PorterIn2004. i don't think we need to go and **** with the team right now. all of this "hurry up and add a vet" talk devalues our young players. we don't even really know what we've got. we don't know how well all of our peices are going to work together with G.O on the court. Even Jack i think has room to grow in the system we have right now. The two amsll forwards we have are ready to break out. and both of our power forwards showed amazing growth during and at the end of the season. McBob is working out with Greg and we've got Brandon and Rudy. Joel was a beast the second half of the year. Raef is an amazing asset and likes his role on the team. everything looks ****ing golden to me as is. seriously i think we look better than most of the teams that where in the playoffs this year. Going into the 08 09 season i think we're dynamite. i really think that perspective is what this team and fanbase need right now.,not a vet pointgaurd we've got Nate.

Great talent, but I think he'd be a bad fit. His ego and no-defense mentality might not set well with Nate and the rest of the team. It's partially the same reason I don't want Mayo here.

I am inclined to agree with these thoughts; ie, brining in an established Mega "Alpha Dog" is not the right thing to do this summer. Guys like Arenas and Davis are in that mold.
Though, I think it is pretty moot issue and neither of those guys were/are on the Blazer radar.
When you hear about the players KP may have tried to acquire like Devin Harris, we wouldn't have that problem.

Right. I suspect Hinrich would be another, like Harris, who'd fit well enough, though I say that mostly because I can't recall a great deal of past friction with him the way I can Arenas and Davis.
And to reiterate, I wouldn't rule out adding someone like Arenas or Davis a year from now, once this team is a little more established. Now just seems too risky to me.

Re: Vet PG
I don't feel Davis would be a real good fit. We're trying to push the ball with a PG that can really move it and penetrate well. I like the idea of obtaining TJ Ford from Toronto. He's very quick, a veteran and available now that Calderon seems poised to move into the starting job.

Between apparently whining about not starting and the health concerns he's not without issues, but I agree that I'd absolutely take him ahead of Davis or Arenas.
That said, I might rather stand pat than bring him in as I can imagine friction developing if McMillan ends up prefering some combination of Roy, Fernandez, and Blake to close out games, which seems a very real option to me at this point.

I wouldn't cry if we picked him up... but I wouldn't prefer it.

Re: Vet PG
I'd rather go after Mo Williams than the likes of Ford, Davis, Arenas. He's on a more reasonable contract than Davis or Arenas, and he doesn't have the injury concerns any of the 3(Ford especially). Good outside shot and ball handling/penetration, he fits age wise as well.

Re: Vet PG
How about Mike Bibby? He's only got one more year on his current deal - a trade of LaFrentz and Jack works cap wise for Bibby. He didn't play that great during the season for ATL, but he did have some good games against Boston.

Bibby might be my favorite suggestion thus far (of the even vaguely realistic options). He's enough on the downside of his career that he's unlikely to be as full of himself as guys like Davis or Arenas, he seems like less of a health risk than Ford, he works well without the ball in his hands, and while I don't think of him as a defensive stopper per se, it seems like he's at least as good as Blake -- that may not be saying a lot but better to have two guys with slightly above average defense and everyone else than one such guy with everyone else.

Re: Vet PG
You can talk about Bibby, but KP isn't going to get him. In a recent interview he made it very clear he will obtain nothing but high character players and there would be no exception.

Re: Vet PG
I don't think Bibby has a question of character. He's only 30 years old, but it seems like he's really heading on the downside of his career. He's not the same clutch player from Sacramento. Maybe injuries have caught up to him.

Re: Vet PG
BP, what character issues are there? I can't recall any. And yeah, Alex, he may be on the downside, but he'd almost certainly be an improvement over at least Jack and/or Rodriguez, yes? I'd think Blake, Bibby, and, (for the sake of argument let's say), Westbrook might be an interesting PG trio, with Westbrook being on the bench most of the first season and gradually taking a larger role as time goes on.
