OT: Draftexpress 2009 Mock Draft Now Up
http://www.draftexpress.com/
Wow! They have Rudy's teammate Ricky Rubio projected as the No. 1 pick. I know he's a special player, but No. 1 overall in the NBA draft is huge. Of course, next year looks like a much weaker draft than this year (and last). So, I suppose it's a possibility.

he is 7 months younger than me
Quote:
NBA Comparison: Walt Frazier/Steve Nash
Strengths: The problem with Ricky Rubio is: Where to start? He has more skill than anyone in his worldwide age group. Including but not limited to: Defense, anticipation, intelligence, ball handling, PG (vision) creation, rhythm, coordination, ambition, scoring and personality ... He is practically ambidextrous, has good foot speed (not great) and excellent body control ... With excellent use of speed/ direction changes he excels both on the open court and the half court game as a set up or assist man ... Catch and shoot is quick and clean ... A smart rebounder, he gets optimum position under both boards ... Voted the best Euro young player for 2007, he has only acceptable shooting %'s both from 2 and 3 points. His shooting delivery is consistent with no waste of time or extra movement. I ve thought about it a lot and think the best comparison to past-present NBA players would be the best of both Walt Clyde Frazier and Steve Nash ... At 17 years old he is already a feared and well respected ACB and Euro-level competitor. He is a warrior and plays all out, all the time. On top of that knows how to flop (with this kid it's an art form) ... He's also a master at getting to the FT line, where he knocs down a high rate (80%) ... Adventurous in his passing, he has two skills; Seeing and when necessary, creation of passing lanes. Excellent. Statistically he is a gem and he has personality. He leads. He knows how to win ... He will become a household name in many more households.
Weaknesses: His outside shooting needs to continue to improve ... Maturity will bring the necessary leg strength and stability to shoot with better consistency ... His ratio of Assists/ Turnovers needs improvement, time and experience being the only necessary elements required. Related to this: His youthful inexperience sometimes gets him caught out of control when competing with physically stronger men at the highest Euro level ... He is thin but will fill out as his frame is good.

And, with three more one-and-done players projected to go in the top five and next years draft will be very young and inexperienced at the top of the lottery. I'm glad we won't be picking there. It's too easy to wiff on a player with such a limited body of work (I'm not referring to Rubio, in spite of his age he has an impressive resume).

rubio has a very small frame, 6'3 and only 180 he needs to get bigger but i think he could be very good. i am also glad we probably wont be picking the freshman and hoping he contributes.....i already have my eye on tyler hansborough, he is by far my fav college player(ima unc fan)..and he would be the perfect banger for us off the bench...looking a little to far ahead but i love the draft soo

Next year's draft looks fairly terrible. Seems like a great time to abandon the lottery once and for all.

That's actually pretty good size for a 17 year old PG (draftexpress actually lists him at 6'4" 180 - he's probably still growing). He'll fill out a little naturally as he ages.
Just for reference, this year's No. 1 pick, Derrick Rose was listed at 6'3" 190 (and measured out at 6'2.5" - in shoes, 196).

Yep, it's a huge step down from his year and last, and looks to be even worse than the 2006 draft, that was pretty bad for most teams outside of Oregon.

Every draft looks weak from afar. This years draft looked weak last year, but the media always hypes up the prospects to make the draft look much better than it really is, IMO. 11 months from now people will be saying the 2009 draft is one of the deepest drafts ever. Book it!

FWIW, Chris Paul's pre-draft measurements: 6'1" - in shoes, 178.
I don't think size will be an issue for Rubio. Strength might be, at first, but that will improve as he gets older. He may very well end up being the best player in the 2009 draft, but it's way too early to say.

Actually Rubio's got a pretty amazing frame, he's listed at 6'4" 180, but his wingspan was recently said to be 6'10". He needs to add strength, and he's far from being a special athlete, but he's got pterodactyl like arms.
I don't think he'll go no.1 though, he's a great prospect but this upcoming year he's going to compete in a better league than last year(Euroleague), without the help of Rudy(leading scorer, assists, steals etc). If DKV and Rubio individually struggle his stock will drop a tad, and because he's playing overseas he won't have the exposure or the hype that one of these freshmen will undoubtly get. He'll probably end up more like Gallinari, mid lotto.

I hope he gets injured or signs a complicated contract causing him to drop to the mid-20s.

Re: OT: Draftexpress 2009 Mock Draft Now Up
I think some of you guys are underestimating Rubio as a prospect. He's probably the best international PG prospect ever... unless he totally tanks this year or he signs a fugly contract, he'll go top 3 or 4... and even with those things happening I'd bet he goes top 10.
The guy is special and NBA teams know it.

Re: OT: Draftexpress 2009 Mock Draft Now Up
To my knowledge Rubio already has a very fugly contract, 4 or 5 more years and a pretty big buyout if I'm not mistaken.
This is an excerpt from DX that says as much:
I have to be honest: I never liked the idea of having Ricky Rubio in the first spot of the 2009 mock draft. Indeed I still firmly think that he won’t go there once everything is said and done (he’s a point guard after all, and not that incredibly athletic). But everyday that looks like less of an impossible outcome, and I hardly doubt that anybody else can claim that predicted spot as much as him at this point (regardless of the fact that his contract will likely prevent him for declaring for that particular draft).

Boob, you have posted several times that Sergio can't even hold his roster spot on the Spanish team against some 17 year old. Now we hear that that kid will be first pick in the NBA draft. Suddenly, Sergio is knocked off of Purgatory's List of the Disgraced.
