Re: Duckworth memorial to be at MC
Are they still doing construction on Steel Bridge? I hope not, cause it is a hassle to get from the westside over the river without driving.

I'm pretty sure they finished up construction on Aug. 24, but trimet.org will probably let you know for sure.

Re: Duckworth memorial to be at MC
cool thanks. I've never been to a public memorial before. How long do they usually run and what kind of things go on? People just speak about memories,etc..slideshows?

Re: Duckworth memorial to be at MC
I was told the team is strongly suggesting you take public transportation, as there are other events at the complex that day.

Re: Duckworth memorial to be at MC
Wow, very glad I went. Very emotional. When Boyz II Men came on the video, it was very hard to fight back the tears, same when they played the cbs broadcast of him coming out of the tunnel for game 7. My heart really goes out to Jerome who had a tough time staying composed. You really got the sense as to how close that team was, I am very glad our current core group of guys seems to enjoy one anothers company on and off the court.

Re: Duckworth memorial to be at MC
I was there. My guess is there was about 1,500-2,000 people there. My buddy and I spotted Wheeler, Harvey, Pritchard, Penn, McMillan, Porter, Cliff Robinson, Buck Williams and Kersey. Drexler couldn't make it back from Taiwan, but he delivered a video tribute to Duckworth.
Larry Miller delivered a few remarks, as did Traci Rose, who does community relations work with the Blazers. She talked about how Duckworth had been excluded from the previous front office regime and how he hadn't really wanted to dirty his good name with the Jail Blazers. Then I cried when she said how proud he was of McMillan and how much he enjoyed being a part of this team again. Before he died, Duckworth was really excited about where this team was going and was happy to see the good character guys.
Buck, Porter and Kersey all spoke in person, and Kersey really had a hard time keeping it together. A couple of Duckworth's friends and his nephew spoke, as well. The team chaplain ended things, and Schonley kind of MCed the thing, delivering the opening remarks and introducing each person as they spoke.
Toward the end, I think it was the chaplain who got the crowd up to applaud Duckworth's mother, since all the speakers mentioned how much he loved her and how important she was. The crowd gave her about a one or two-minute standing ovation. It was pretty cool.
After the service, McMillan was just hanging out outside of the Coliseum, talking to people. There was a half dozen or so people crowded around, and I didn't want to bug him that much.
All in all, it was really emotional and touching. Duckworth really touched a lot of people.
