Let The Cake Bake?
We've heard this said many times now, by Pritchard and by fans, "let the cake bake." While the metaphor is somewhat accurate, I believe it is not the best representation of a sports franchise. A team is never "done". You don't pull it out of the oven and say "voila!!!". You add and subtract pieces over the years, always trying to perfect your roster. Even the Spurs, with their core of Parker, Ginobili and Duncan, add pieces every summer to keep their team on top.
A better metaphor would be a soup. The Blazers are cooking a stew, they have their main ingredients, but they still need to season. The hard part is done, we have Roy, Aldridge, and Oden. We also added Bayless and Rudy. The absolute WORST thing you could do is stand pat and say "the cake is done," especially this early in the process. We should always be looking for ways to improve our team.
We have a young roster. Most of our guys are under 25 years old. If there ever was a time to play with the team, add and subtract guys, now would be that time. We've established some chemistry, but nothing even close to the chemistry we'll have three or four years from now. KP needs to keep our core together, but if he can find a way to add a point guard, a solid bench player, or a defensive stopper, he should do it. This soup needs seasoning. We're not a Championship contender yet.

Re: Let The Cake Bake?
I don't think Pritchard is ever going to feel that the team is "done" and just needs to be left alone. Every good GM is always open to opportunities to improve the team, because nothing is guaranteed and stagnation leaves you wide open to something not going as expected and your planned window of opportunity slamming closed much earlier or never even opening properly.

I wasn't really aiming this at KP though

Re: Let The Cake Bake?
Well, I think the point is, we have ingredients that we aren't taking out, no matter what we're cooking

Re: Let The Cake Bake?
I think it's more like a steak on the bbq, and you've got potatoes and corn on the cob to go along with it, plus some hot dogs for the kids. Depending on the people, you need some beer or perhaps a nice red wine, and some soda pop for the little ones. You need to worry a little about the weather, because the bbq isn't in a covered area, but the weather has been pretty good lately. The neighbors are having a party too, and they can be kind of loud after they've had a few drinks, and you don't like the way their kid keeps hanging around your daughter, although it is hard to know what to do about that. She is, after all, a teenager and not entirely receptive to your point of view on any subject, much less boys. And the wife seems to be a little bit of a hypochondriac lately, rushing off to the doctor's office almost every week. Which reminds you that you really need to get her car serviced, and that the kids keep parking their bikes in the driveway so that you have to move them when you get home at night. And is it really a good idea to be eating so much beef as we have been lately? Is there any butter to go on the corn? It was on the list but you didn't see it in the kitchen.

Your metaphor is a bit simplistic. What about the music? That's the problem with quick analogies, they leave too much out.
