The goal is winning a championship. Why? Because it takes a great deal of teamwork, dedication, combined intelligence, and luck .... for most.
Then, there's LA. They play by different rules. Can't win a championship with your current superstars, just go out and attract more superstars. Money talks.
It seems to me that should LA win it all, Payton's accomplishment is cheapened. Still, they'll have to jump through all the hoops to get there.
Am I bitter. Yeah, a little.
But here's my ace ...
The Spurs championship was more admirable though. Portland's was too.

Kobe could become a basket case after this last mess, Shaq could eat cake all summer and GP could finally get injured. That leaves Malone and the bench. It's a long year and anything could happen. Malone and Shaq might get into it and GP might get Kobe pissed, if Kobe is not in jail.
Phil could get sick again and then it's all down hill.

Why?
Ed, do you honestly think this team can compete with the new Western Superteams.....LA, SA, Dallas and probably Sac.
Throw in Minnesota getting Cassell and Howard and things aint lookin good.
But then think about the age of these Superteams. They are all quite old, especially Sac and LA.
We should rebuild areound young players, and in 2-4 years when the superpowers are no more than a bunch of old guys with long contracts we WILL have a playoff chance.

Could you imagine Damon sulking all day, GP yelling at Sheed and Bonzi and Patterson and GP going at it? How about Patterson, GP and Zach going at it? This was a smart move and a blessing not getting GP, this team would have erupted with one more temper. I think our pres saw the writing on the wall, and urged the organization to pass. GP would not have been the smartest PR move. Ya think Damon was at GP's house while he was in AZ? Maybe Damon was bringing back some of GP's finest!
I'm sort of relieved that GP's not here and his new big arsss contract either!

Since its being reported that GP refused a bigger deal from Portland, it looks like Patterson DID want GP in Portland. There goes that theory. Think he'll make up whatever salary difference from Portland in endorsements piching stuff?
Of course you're relieved that GPs not coming here, now you won't have to face the music over your comments over what he could have meant to this team. We'll never know, but I thought he'd have made a big difference. I would have bought my first Blazer jersey too.

We competed just fine with the Mavs when it mattered. I think we're good enough to win 50 games again and get a little lucky and make some noise in the playoffs.

I'm not impressed by the acquisition of Juwan Howard, and I don't see Cassell playing better than Hudson did last year.

Denver and Golden State and Cleveland and the Clippers and several other teams have been saying the same thing. In 2-4 years new teams will have emerged that will be just as good as the Lakers/Kings/Mavs/Spurs are right now. There's no safe gamble on a weak point in the NBA.
The Blazers are all in their prime, with the exception of Pippen and Davis. They have young players like ZR, Woods and hopefully Outlaw who will develop over time and fill in for FA losses and/or incarcerations.
IMO, we're better off staying the course and adding good pieces whenever we can than throwing up out hands and conceding that being the 5th-best team (or so) in the NBA is not good enough.

You may compete...but, I can see anything more than a second round playoffs appearence.

Maybe they won't make a huge impact...but, the T-Wolves are getting better. They are most likely a 2 round of the playoffs or WCF team, and KG keeps getting better...

All those teams have bad management/owners. They also can't attract FA's.
As long as PDX doesn't make a complete overhaul and just removes trouble makers Sheed, Damon, Patterson then rebuilds around Z. Randolph, you could stay around a .500 team and still compete for the playoffs, while getting younger and cleaning up the image.

Hmm...I say a minor rebuil is called for. Sheed, Damon and Patterson should be the first wave to go...Other problem makers can follow.
PG - McInnis / DA
SG - Bonzi / Woods
SF - Woods / Outlaw
PF - Randolph
C - D.Davis / Ruben B.B
I wouldn't reccomend a complete clean out....
But, I think that is your core that you have to build around, if you complement them with some veterans and good attitudes, I think you lessen the 'Jailblazer' image and stay playoff competitive.

LOL, that would be worst scenario for the Lakers...
But, what if Kobe gets cleared of all charges, Shaq muscles up and trims down in the offseason, GP stays healthy and they all win a ring....

Too bitter to think logically, apparently. Money talks. How does this statement apply to these guys giving up millions to be an integral part of a potential championship?

Ron - You're not taking in the big picture.
1. How much more money can be had by the NBA if LA goes to the Finals? How influencial was the league in helping this happen. Of course these are just my beliefs, but if they're smart (which they are) ...
2. What other city could attract 4 elite players? New York may be the #1 market in America, but they could never do what LA has done, IMO.
They may win it all, but it won't be special.
