Memphis also loses a good defensive player as well, so they don't gain much in terms of defense. And besides, their 2/3 rotation is crowded enough as it is: why would they want to add more players to it? Do you really think Derek Anderson or Ruben Patterson is that much of an upgrade over Posey, Mike Miller or Battier? I don't even think they'd be an upgrade at all, yet alone a significant one.

And it also leaves them with no quality bigmen outside of Swift and Gasol. Even if you don't want to talk about this in terms of talent/player-value wise (although I'd say Battier and JWill have more trade value than anyone you have the Grizz getting), as far as team-needs goes, the Grizzlies do the exact opposite of what they're looking to do (trade for a center).

And this frees up money how? Williams and Wright combine to make 14 million next year, and Battier has a 3.2 million dollar team option, which a team would be foolish to not pick up.

The package you have the Grizz getting makes 14.2 million next year. If it's all about saving money, the Grizz would be better off just not picking up Battier's option, since even just a swap of JWill and Lorenzen Wright for Patterson and Anderson doesn't help the Grizzlies at all.

Ruben Patterson's trade value right now is basically 0, and Derek Anderson's trade value is severely hindered by the fact that he's an average-to-above-average SG with a longterm deal that calls for 7.8 million this year, all the way up to 9.7 million in 2006-2007.

Exactly. We lose Battier for Patterson. I'd be jumping for joy over that one. And as if Posey and Miller isn't enough, we also have Person, Dickerson (they say he's healthy, but I doubt that), Theron Smith, and Dahntay Jones at our 2/3 position. By trading JWill/Battier/Wright, not only are we trading one 2/3 for two 2/3's, we're further clogging our most crowded positions with lesser talent.

On top of that, we lose Wright, who has a bad contract, but not outrageous, and we gain Patterson, with an equally bad contract, given the position he plays. Big men get paid more than smaller men. NBA Fact #3942. Who's our frontcourt backup? Or are we planning on playing Gasol and Swift 48 mpg?

Derek Anderson's contract is every bit as bad or WORSE than Jason Williams'. It's terrible. The guy is injury prone, and he'd be on the bench instead of starting like Williams would. Williams is also better than Anderson at a position that we have less depth in. Trading JWill and gaining back Anderson does zero for our future cap room, so there's no "marquee player" that's going to get signed next season...

I don't see how Anderson qualifies as a "veteran" any moreso than JWill does, either.

Wanna look at our lineup with that trade?

McInnis/Watson/Bell
Posey/Anderson/Person/Dickerson
Miller/Patterson/Smith
Gasol
Swift/Trybanski/Archibald

We trade two starters one of the best role players in the NBA today with no attitude for a starter last year that won't start for us, a former backup PG that WILL have to start for us, and an average role player with a pathetic attitude.

On top of that, we only have two guys that are qualified to play major minutes in the NBA in our frontcourt, and our cap situation stays right where it is.
Pull the trigger, Jerry.
