Chase Budinger
New to the forum.... I am a Virginia Cavaliers fan. Last night they played the Arizona Wildcats in our new arena. They are LOADED with future NBAers. We beat em' YESSS! A very good game. I got a chance to see their freshman Chase Budinger. Wow is all I can say...wow. He is a stud. He makes everything look easy. He was an effortless scorer...unselfish...very athletic, and best of all; he let the game come to him. He's a legit 6 feet 8. This was the first time I saw him, and he lived up to what I've been reading about him. The only knock I saw with him was his defense...other than that I was amazed by his play. Did anyone else see this game? I thought Marcus Williams played great too, but his defense is definitely suspect as well. Do you guys see Budinger jumping to the league this year?

Re: Chase Budinger
I watched the game as well.
Budinger's talent level is that of some seniors and NBA players. He is explosive, quick, extremely athletic, a good shooter, very good ball handler, and a good passer. He was great in the 1st half, but disappeared in the 2nd half, scoring only 2 points. He is going to be a joy to watch for at least the next two years.
The reason I say that is because I dont think he will leave after this season. One of the reasons is, Chase could play on the Olympic Volleyball team if he stays for his junior season. Now I know he might not stay that long, but I think he at least gives it some consideration. Chase was the #1 volleyball recruit in the nation and is one of the best volleyball prospects in many years. Like I said, I think Chase at least gives the Olympic team some thought, because there is no way a NBA team allows him to play on the Olympic team.
As for Marcus, he is just amazing. He is suspect on defense, but his offensive game is so refined for a sophomore. The one knock I have on Marcus is that he tends to make silly mistakes late in games. He has not been the clutch player Arizona has been looking for and missed a couple of late free throws with the game on the line last night. Marcus did the same thing last season, in UA's opening game against UConn.
I really think Marcus will be a lottery pick this season and I fully expect him to step up and be that go to guy UA is looking for. However, I would not count out Chase for that role. As time goes on I think you will see Chase really step up and become Mr. Consistency, because there is no wing in the nation that can shut him down if he plays the way he is capable of playing (ie. 1st half against UVA).

Re: Chase Budinger
Wow...the more I learn about Budinger, the more I'm amazed. I think that explains why he jumps well, and uses his hands equally as well. He made a very difficult (looking) lay-up on the fast break...he hit it off the backboard. He acted as if it was nothing. Marcus Williams was smooth...he's very confident, not cocky...just confident. He plays a similar game to Budinger, wouldn't you say? He had a sweet reverse dunk last night. The other foward, McClleand(sp?) is a good shooter, but he seems to be lacking the fluidness of Williams and Budinger. Arizona is stacked this year.

Re: Chase Budinger
Yes Marcus is very smooth.
Jawann McClellan is the player you are talking about. He is coming off of a few injuries last season that set him back. Jawann was the spark off the bench as a freshman for the UA team that lost the Elite 8 Game to Illinois. He is very talented and can shoot and rebound well. He isnt athletic, but is a leader and a winner.

Re: Chase Budinger
Not many guys are ready for the nba after their freshman season and i assume Chase wont be any differant. as far as a business decision goes that is a differant story, i would hope he stays at least through his sophomore season.

Re: Chase Budinger
Jaw-dropping athleticism combined with great instincts.
The guy plays like he was born with a basketball in his hands.
He is as exciting as they come.

Re: Chase Budinger
Thanks TucsonClip for your insight. Above poster, I agree completely with you on his instincts. That’s why it looks so easy to him.

Re: Chase Budinger
Speaking of NBA prospects, Virginia has a good player in Sean Singletary. He'll be in the NBA in the near future and I think Virginia has a good shot at making the tourney this year.

Re: Chase Budinger
He also has that shock factor. Because when you look at him, you really dont expect him to be that good.

Re: Chase Budinger
Chase Budinger is the only person that has ever dunked on me. When he's in the NBA, I can say that (somewhat) proudly.
I have seen this guy play since his freshman year in HS. BigMike (a poster on this board) is more knowledgable concerning Chase because they've been playing together and against each other since they were little.
I have seen enough of Chase though. Everything he does seems to come so easily to him. Even his jumper looks smooth. Chase is such a hardworker and had one of the best trainers in Southern California working with him in Trent Suzuki.
From his junior to senior year, his jumper and ballhandling improved a ton. His defense still remained subpar for a player of his talent, but against HS competition his defense was good enough.
He has proven that he can improve on certain aspects of the game in a short amount of time. I think with Lute Olson coaching he him he can definitely improve on his defense a lot this year.
I can't wait to see how he does offensively this year though. He has started it off well averaging 24.5 PPG, but I wanna see how he does against the Pac 10.

Re: Chase Budinger
Damn he is good, too bad he will stay only 1 year at Arizona if he keeps this up.
