AJ Price
Point Guard
UConn
ESPN stats
So far: 14.6 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists per game. Solid stats all around.
The most hyped UConn point guard since Taliek Brown is finally putting together the season that husky fans have been waiting for. After a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and laptop-gate, Price is finally fulfilling his potential. With a scintillating 26-9 performance against Notre Dame, I think Price has become worthy of a thread.
Pros: Excellent size and strength for a point guard. Great leader and clutch player; will take over a game offensively when everyone else on the team is stagnant. Crafty player, will create something out of nothing. Has one of the best floaters in basketball and can make one-handed shots consistently as far out as 15 feet, making him a threat any time he can get near the paint. 3 point shooting has improved tremendously, though he has not yet shown NBA range.
Cons: While he is a good passer, he does not wow you like a Marcus Williams. Not especially quick for a point guard and will be below-average in the NBA. Has yet to show any type of shutdown ability on college point guards, with teammates Austrie and Wiggins consistently outplaying him on that end. Even though he has good size, I've never seen him dunk or explode for a finish(to be fair, his athleticism has improved tremendously from last year when it looked like he could barely get off the floor for a layup). Character concerns regarding his role in stealing laptops which led to a year-long suspension. Will be 23/24 when drafted.
I have real concerns about whether he can check point guards in the NBA, but his midrange game is spectacular and he knows how to put it in the bucket and set up teammates in position to score.
I like him as a late first rounder and top tier backup point guard in the league.
