I just wanted to get a thread started with some updates that aren't necessarily on the radar of you more mainstream hip hop heads. Maybe I can expose you guys to some of the tracks and artists that I like and maybe even some that I produce (or even ghostwrite for on occasion). Since this is a new thread, I'll start with some of the guys I've been listening to for a long time. Keep in mind that most of my exposure to these rappers has come from the battle rap subset of the industry.

Locksmith (IMGMI; EA Ski) - Way back in the day he won some battles on MTV, but he's been grinding and honing his craft a lot in recent years. I really liked his last album.

Illmaculate (Sand People) - Two time world rap champ, Scribble Jam winner, Spin the Mic winner, and all-around beast. Easily one of my top 10 favorite artists at the moment.

360 - This guy went platinum in Australia and is certainly an acquired taste, but I like his more recent, serious projects.

Ness Lee - Heavily multi-syllabic style. Dirty south topics. Very thoughtful schemes.

Wax and Dumbfoundead (Herbal T; Swim Team) - These are the two most improved rappers in the underground in the last two years. It just so happens they decided to make a couple albums together.

What kind of involvement did you have in the battle scene?

I didn't know you produced too either

Mostly behind the scenes work. I have helped organize a couple events. I designed the flier for one event. Other than that, I've been mostly involved with the artists: producing and doing a tiny bit of ghostwriting on occasion.

I use a combo of HammerHead and Cubase for the most part, but some days when I'm feeling old school... nothing beat Pro Tools. You produce?

I'm fruity loops all the way..I kind of don't like the loop based programs and I don't know how to master the VSTs in a program like Cubase or Pro Tools because I can't actually play the keyboard

I do have pro tools but I use it to record...

I think Pro tools became the industry standard a while back just because of the user interface. It looks so much like a normal synth board that it makes the transition easy for old school types. I personally prefer Cubase.

Quest McCody - You might know him from the MTV show Made or from his short stint on Showtime's "Interscope Presents The Next", but Quest is still holding it down for the D. This is an older video, but this track stays stuck in my head.

Bender (Flight Distance) - Canadian rapper with a story-telling style often reminiscent of early slam poets. I relate to a ton of the stuff he's been through.

That's my dirty little secret. I typically boycott all Apple products, but I like GarageBand. What do you use?

Well I use Edison within the fruity loops. Problem is lately I've been trying to take my shit to that next next level you know..but the samples still tend to sound choppy on certain sound devices. On most speakers they sound good, but car speakers and headphones especially they sound too choppy for my taste. Like naked ears probably wouldn't pay attention to it or care but I really notice. I'll make a thread in my board and post some examples

I'm trying to find one of those tempo finding programs that will place the chops right on the eighths or whatever I need.
