Coaching carousel in NBA leaves some dizzy

Changes hit the league, leading San Antonio's Gregg Popovich to say, "Maybe the business is more valuable than I thought."

Hubie Brown was the first to go, his will no longer enough to sustain him as Memphis Grizzlies coach. He quit on Thanksgiving Day, saying he couldn't ignore "the highest order."

Rudy Tomjanovich bowed out after 43 games with the Los Angeles Lakers, his "rejuvenation" after one season away from the bench and a bout with bladder cancer suddenly drowned out by anxiety and the realization that this wasn't much fun any longer.

In the last week alone, Johnny Davis was fired by the Orlando Magic, Don Nelson in effect resigned from the Dallas Mavericks, and Paul Silas was let go by the Cleveland Cavaliers. What made those situations interesting was that none of those teams was in the ditch. All three could make the playoffs, with Dallas and Cleveland seemingly locks.

"With 14 games to go, you're saying it's all the coach's fault now? I don't see what message that sends," Adelman said. "I'm just amazed at our league. Some of it doesn't make sense. This league is really fragile. You can really go from the penthouse to the outhouse in a month."

Adelman knows the rigors of NBA, as does his family

Wins and losses-wise, Rick Adelman has suffered much worse than this.

His two seasons with the Golden State Warriors in the mid-1990s were a complete mess, with the team having no practice facility or home gym to call their own because of renovations to the Arena. All in all, it made for a "brutal experience," Adelman said.

This season, with the Kings, is entirely different and all the more taxing, never mind the 42-27 record. Adelman, in his seventh Kings season, hasn't endured a campaign quite like this, with expectations meeting with a rash of injuries and mixed in with two significant trades that changed the franchise's face.

Adelman, 58, was granted a contract extension earlier this season, which is good considering the ever-shaky job security for coaches in the NBA. But if you're wondering if there's a lot of joy in victory this season, there is not.

Thomas is full of confidence awaiting Mavs

Kings forward Kenny Thomas, like all athletes, believes his team is going to win every game it plays but is prevented from saying so because he's not supposed to feed the opposition bulletin board material.

Oh, well.

Thomas is the new permanent starter at power forward for the Kings, who'll meet All-Star Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks tonight at Arco Arena in the final regular-season meeting between the teams.

Call it braggadocio, confidence or merely the knowledge the Kings have nothing to lose with defeats in their first three games this season against the Mavs, Thomas said his team will end Dallas' four-game regular-season winning streak over the Kings.

"That's going to change (tonight)," Thomas said Wednesday afternoon after a light workout at the team's practice facility. "I think we're going to win every game. I'm probably going to guard Dirk, and I think if we limit their transition game, we'll be OK. They are like us because they like to push the ball up the court."
