The Sacramento Kings are a team that needs to change their identity. The Kings started the process when they traded star forward Chris Webber to the Philadelphia 76ers for forwards Brian Skinner, Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson. Sacramento, which fell in five games to Seattle in the first round of the 2004-05 playoffs, still has point guard Mike Bibby, center Brad Miller and sharp-shooting forward Peja Stojakovic, who could leave via free agency. Shooting guard Cuttino Mobley could also leave through free agency.
Sacramento will try and keep Stojakovic, who averaged a team-best 20.1 points per game in 66 contests this past season, while the Kings may let Mobley, who was acquired during the campaign from Orlando for defensive specialist Doug Christie, take his talents elsewhere.
Bibby had an excellent year, as he averaged 19.6 points and a team-best 6.8 assists. Miller, who registered 15.6 points and 9.3 boards in 56 contests, gives the Kings a tough center who can play inside and outside.
The Kings will structure their roster around Bibby, Miller and Stojakovic. Guard Bobby Jackson and forwards Darius Songaila, Skinner and Thomas can all play roles that will help Sacramento remain a playoff-caliber team while it tweaks its roster.
It will be hard for Sacramento to find an impact player with the 23rd overall pick. The Kings have had success with foreign players, and they may go that route with their first-round selection.
