Press Conference from Kings.com
You come from a country (Dominican Republic) where baseball is a big deal...
Garcia: “I used to play basketball a lot with my uncle. I used to play baseball and basketball. I just fell in love with the sport. Once I got to New York I just played basketball. I was intense before the draft. After my name was called (by) my favorite team, it was great. Now that I’m here, meeting everybody, I’m feeling even better.”
“I used to love watching them (the Kings) play, the way they pass the ball, the way they set screens, move without the ball. I kind of like that kind of stuff. Going up and down the floor a lot. I kind of enjoy it.”
Why the number 32?
Garcia: “I don’t know. That’s the number I wore at Louisville. I like it.”
What was it like playing for Rick Pitino?
Garcia: “It was great. He showed me a lot of things. He was like a father to me. I talked to him yesterday and he was really excited for me. He said it was best team for me, because of the style they play. He’s happy for me. I thank him for all the things he did for me. He told me to keep doing same things I was doing at Louisville – keep working hard and stay humble and stay hungry.”
“My family worked hard to get me where I am now. I worked so hard. It feels really good.”
How good a defender do you think you can be in this league?
Garcia: “ As good defender as I can be. I’ll work hard at it everyday. It’ll be a learning experience for me. I’m going to work on that everyday until I get better and better. If that’s what they need me to do, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll work everyday and I’ll be a good defender.”
“My goal would be every time I step on the basketball court to give it my all. I just want to take it step by step. I don’t want to think about what’s in the future. I want to think about now, what I have to do now to get better and help my team.”
“The first thing I want to do is get in the weight room, just bulk up a little bit more. I know they need my defense, so I know I’m going to have to keep working on that.”
RICK ADELMAN
How well does he fit into what you want to do?
“Obviously he adds some length to our team. Offensively, he can pass the ball, handle it. Defensively, the guy has an attitude that he’s going to work hard and try to learn. As a team defender, he’s going to be good because that’s how Louisville plays. I just think that he just plays extremely hard, he’s played for a very good program. He’s going to have an opportunity to play here.”
“He gives it to you everyday. Basketball-wise, like I said if you have another ball-handler, passer, he can to that. He’s a rookie – but it’s there. Our system’s good for him. I hope he’ll learn quickly. We’ll get the opportunity to see what he can do and we’ll take it from there.”
“He should step in and help you, not knowing what’s going to happen over the summer. We have a young piece, but we have a piece that’s going to be a good player in this league. His experience playing three years in a school like that certainly sets him apart .”
