Sergei Monia going back to Europe
Quote:
One youngster who appears to be leaving the movement is 23-year-old swingman Sergei Monia, a Russian who came to the Kings as part of the Portland trade last season involving center Brian Skinner. After being acquired on Feb. 23, Monia played a total of seven minutes. He has chosen to play in Europe, though Petrie said he hasn't left yet.
"It's a possibility (that he'll leave), but he's with us right now," he said.

Monia is gone -- The Kings requested waivers on small forward Sergei Monia, who decided to play in Europe. The 23-year-old came to Sacramento from Portland in a Feb. 23 trade and played in only three games. His departure will clear about $1 million off the Kings' books.

Looks like former Blazers first-round draft pick Sergei Monia is heading back to Europe after the Kings requested waivers on the 23-year-old yesterday.

I don't know about you, but when Sergei Monia and Viktor Khryapa first came to town, I had higher hopes for Sergei than I did for Viktor. But while Vik has carved out a nice little niche for himself in this league, Monia never looked comfortable. I've heard much of that may have been due to the fact he didn't learn how to speak English and was unable to effectively communicate with coaches and teammates..

Re: Sergei Monia going back to Europe
Not learning how to speak english well enough is not a good sign. I always thought that Monia's potential was the reason we traded the moderately useful Skinner for the totally useless Potapenko. Guess not. Maybe with $1 Mill less on the books now the Maloofs with go a lttle over the Luxery Tax threshold on a Bonzi sign and trade?

Re: Sergei Monia going back to Europe
Meh, he doesn't have much talent and clearly hasn't "fit" in the league from the get-go. I almost wish he waited around another year, so he could sit next to Victor Khryapa on the plane on the way back to the homeland.
Not that Monia would have stolen their minutes, but it gives Martin and Garcia more freedom to show their stuff.

He must have had talent if he was a first round pick, I wish he stayed in the Nba, and sign with a team that would have given him minutes like Charlotte. I think in a couple of years he will turn out to be like Jasikevecius in Europe or something.
