Artest Criticizes USA Basketball

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ar...sa_basketball/

Quote:
September 10, 2006 -- Ron Artest continued his assault on USA Basketball last night, saying sneaker companies have too much of a say in who competed at the World Championships last month in Japan. Still smarting after not even getting a tryout for the squad, Artest also blamed politics for his being snubbed.
"They didn't even give me a chance to represent them," Artest said before last night's All-Star Classic for Wheelchair Charities at the Garden. "I was one of like 10 players in the league that came out and said I want to play, and they didn't even give me a chance to play."

While Artest has made it a mission to help Wheelchair Charities, an organization that provides specialized beds, wheelchairs and transportation for those in need, Knicks guard Stephon Marbury was a no-show at last night's annual fundraiser. Originally scheduled to appear, Marbury blew off the game so he could continue his sneaker-selling tour instead.

Re: Artest Criticizes USA Basketball

Good. He should criticize them. They lost. Maybe Ron is an international incident waiting to happen if you put him on Team USA, but he is exactly what they need as a player (along with a Michael Redd-style pure shooter). Sir Charles went, and he said something about a team from a country in Africa being "Spear-Chuckers" or something like that, but we won. If they are serious about winning, take a chance and send Ron. If they want to tip-toe around and send less than the best, they will continue to lose.

For all the talk about Coach K and an ultra-athletic lineup bring unstopable D, they got lit up vs. Greece. No offense to Shane Battier, but they probably could have used the best defender going.

I think part of the new era of team USA isn't only the youth movement, but a more ppolitcally concious team where clean cut images are a huge factor in the development of the team. They don't want the controversy of some players, or the stereotype of me basketball.

Look at AI. He had deddicted alot of time into the USA program yet he gets the cold shoulder. Gilbert Arenas got arrested earlier this summer and he doesn't make the team. Artest....well you know the sotry there.

So good for Ron for speaking his mind. God knows he would have been a great asset to that ball club
