Kings, Pistons exchange first-round picks

Kings, Pistons exchange first-round picks (6-9-03).

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ The Sacramento Kings completed a complicated trade of first-round draft picks with the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

Detroit got Sacramento's rights to the Atlanta Hawks' pick in one of the next two drafts. In return, the Kings reclaimed a first-round pick they traded to Detroit two years ago.

The Kings acquired the Hawks' pick last summer for the rights to Dan Dickau. Sacramento owed one of its first-round picks before 2008 to the Pistons after a 2001 trade involving Jon Barry and Mateen Cleaves.

``This gives us all of our flexibility back with regards to our first-round draft selections going forward,'' Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said. ``It also eliminates the possibility of us losing a mid-first-round draft pick in the next three to four years.

So now which team has which pick? The trade is confusing me a bit.

Simple. The Piston keep their pick. And We keep ours.

Another great move by Petrie, the Kings have nothing to lose and (possibly) a lot to gain by this deal. How on earth did Joe Dumar agreed to it? If (god forbid) the future Kings pick turn out to be mid-first, the Piston will be kicking themselves.

On the other hand, it seems to me Dumar has his eyes set on a particular player at #25.

Yeah but I think your GM messed it up a little in the 1st place...Mateen for JB and a first rounder? Mateen may be a great cheerleader on the bench, but how many minutes did he play?

Well to be fair to Petrie, he made that trade because of $$, not talent.

In order to obtain Bibby, the Kings also had to swallow Bent Price's contract. Somebody had to go to make way for Price's $8 millions. I thought it was a pretty good job for Petrie just to find somebody under the cap who was willing to trade younger, cheaper, and a fresh 1st round pick (Mateen) for older and more expensive (Barry).

The one trade I didn't agree was the Nick Anderson trade. But I guess it was made because Tariq had an attitude problem.

As for Mateen, I think he's a decent player. But he just doesn't fit into the Princeton offense.
