Kings want Noel Felix for their Summer League team
Quote:
Unused potential: Ramel Curry and Noel Felix, two talented foreigners who got little playing time this season, left yesterday, deeply disappointed.
"I personally went through a very frustrating season," explained Curry last week. "Jerusalem wanted me, because I was great last year, and if you ask me, the whole difference is that last year I played. I'm disappointed they brought me but didn't give me a real chance to prove myself.
"It should have been different, but I don't have any control over that. I can't say I regret coming because it was a positive experience for me and my wife to be in Jerusalem."
Curry said he believed the problem this year was the failure to bring the best out of otherwise outstanding players. "Despite everything I think Danny Klein is a smart businessman, and he'll know how to pull Jerusalem out of its current situation. It's just that I'm pretty sure I won't be there by then."
Felix concurs about the failure to exploit the team's talent. "When I got here, they told me I'd get minutes or at least the chance to prove myself. Right now I don't see myself returning to Israel. I want to compete, and it's just not happening here. My two years here didn't amount to anything except for drawing a salary, and a basketball player's career is short."
Curry claimed when he was recruited the club knew his strength was defense, but "they just didn't look at me, even when others were slaughtering us under the basket." He complained: "I didn't sass, I didn't miss a practice, so I just don't get it. At Maccabi I understood they wanted to give the younger Lior Eliyahu a chance ahead of me. The problem is they don't know me here, so no one cares. I only came to Jerusalem because I knew I could help out, and it's just a shame."
Felix has his own theory about the team's failure on a group level. "It's not a coincidence a team like Holon was so successful this year," he said. "The players there got a chance to show their talent free style. Everything here was so tactical that players couldn't show off their talent. For example, if I was free by the basket, it's only logical they'd pass to me, but they only wanted me to set a block for the guard instead of picking up easy points. It's frustrating they only want me to rebound and block. I think Yehu Orland, for example, is one of the best scorers in Europe, along with Sharp and Shason, but they just didn't use him." Felix adds the Sacramento Kings want him for their summer league and thinks he's got a shot in the NBA. "Whoever follows me from here will be surprised," he says.
