SacBee: Depth Chart and Possible Moves
Quote:
You don't have to understand the microscopic intricacies of the salary cap and luxury tax to comprehend what it means for the Kings' roster. They have 10 players. One, Darius Songaila, has never played in the NBA. Another, Gerald Wallace, has spent two seasons near the end of the bench. The same for a third, Lawrence Funderburke, although it has been six seasons. There isn't an experienced backup for small forward Peja Stojakovic. Bobby Jackson is the experienced backup to shooting guard Doug Christie, but Jackson and point guard Mike Bibby play together only in certain situations.
The current Kings team:
Point guard -- Bibby, Jackson, Christie.
Shooting guard -- Christie, Jackson, Wallace.
Small forward -- Stojakovic, Wallace.
Power forward -- Chris Webber, Miller, Funderburke, Songaila.
Center -- Vlade Divac, Miller.
The Kings have two things in their favor. The regular season doesn't start tomorrow, and worthwhile players are still available at the spot they most need to fill, swingman.
Restricted free agent Stephen Jackson, coming off a good season in San Antonio and one of Bibby's closest friends, is on the market, but he's looking for a salary the Kings aren't looking to pay. That still leaves several options: Jim Jackson, a success in Sacramento last season, Calbert Cheaney and Bryon Russell. A level down is Raja Bell and Voshon Lenard.
Some of those players might prefer patience until training camp draws closer to see if any teams increase an offer. They will wait and consider their options, as will the Kings. It's still early enough in the free-agent game, but the money has run out, even if time hasn't.
