This was a deep draft, and at that time our only backup PF was Lawrence Funderburke. Since everyone in the Kings management knew they would be way over the cap anyways, they figured "Meh...why not sign him? He might turn out to be OK." At the very least he's a big guy who can foul.

Heck, why not. They're over the cap anyway, Edward's contract is like pocket change (by NBA standard), and who knows if he may turn into the next Zeljko Rebraca (another last pick of the draft).

In the past, Petrie has came up with Jerome James, Tyrus Edney, Anthony Johnson, Michael Smith and Lawrence Funderburke in the 2nd round. Petrie even had the foresight to pick Dejan Bodiroga (#51) in 95, who has since gone on to become one of the best ever in Europe. I'm intrique with Edwards to say the least.
