Webber indicted on charge of lying to grand jury
http://sports.iwon.com/news/09092002/v3601.html
By DAVID RUNK
DETROIT (AP) - Sacramento Kings star Chris Webber was indicted Monday on charges he lied to a grand jury about his dealings with a University of Michigan basketball booster more than a decade ago.
Webber, who led Michigan's "Fab Five" team to two NCAA title games, was charged with obstruction of justice and making a false declaration before a grand jury, FBI spokeswoman Dawn Clenney said.
Webber's father, Mayce Webber, and his aunt, Charlene Johnson, were indicted on the same charges.
If convicted, each faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The indictment contends that Webber, his father and aunt lied to the grand jury and conspired to conceal the cash, checks, clothing, jewelry and other benefits that booster Ed Martin gave the player and his family from 1988-93. All three testified in 2000.

I hope this doesn't affect his season. Hopefully he's got the right lawyers... I mean, I don't see him doing any actual time, probably a fine at most. But it sounds serious, doesn't it?

Yeah, I think it sounds bad... truthfully if there are a bunch of rich guys out there, and they want to throw their money around, I could care less. Why doesn't anyone say anything when someone overall over tips? And whose to say that they are at fault or the players? If the player takes money from a booster... and goes to a bad program, that is his fault. I am sure there are tons more stories like that, where players didn't get the right coaching and never made it a step onto a pro court... much less playing in other leagues for money.

If Webber is forced to miss all or part of the season, how do you think the Kings will fare with Clark in the 4 slot? While Clark is no Webber, I think they aren't going to fare to bad without him. Webber missed about the first 20 games of last year and they were still nipping at the Lakers heels.
If they don't have him for the playoffs they will get swept IMO though. Webber is to the Kings what Shaq is to the Lakers. He carries them and let's Bibby bring it home. No CWebb, continued Laker success.

Webber denies accusations, denounces Martin

DETROIT (AP) — Chris Webber was indicted on charges he lied to a grand jury about his dealings with a University of Michigan booster who admits lending the NBA star $280,000 while he was still an amateur...
... "I didn't lie," Webber told USA Today in a story published Tuesday. "The truth always comes out. What this case is about is a 70-year-old man dressed in hip-hop clothes who befriended kids and said he loved kids, and I believed him.
"I didn't know he saw my potential before I saw it. Threats were made. Those threats have come to reality. I believe this is extortion. After the trial, and I am vindicated, this case will be bigger than me lying to the grand jury, which I did not do."
Former booster Ed Martin pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to launder money, admitting he took gambling money, combined it with other funds and lent it to several players while they were still amateurs.

I think they will be fine, but I doubt anything will happen like that...

Webber is so full of it. Traylor, Rose, Taylor and Bullock are the ones who didn't lie. I guess he never smoked pot either. Money can buy you many things but morals is not one of them.

This is a different situation though. Iverson had a local Phillidelphia court, and being the local hero he is, escaped. Chris Webber lied to the Grand Jury. He commited Perjury, and that's not taken lightly in the Federal Court System. On television lawyers stated that Webber has little chance of not facing prison time. This looks like a really bad situation for Chris.
