Question Are Sign-and-Trade Packages Allowed?

I've heard different answers to this question and I'm not sure which to believe.

Can a player be signed-and-traded along with other players on his team to another team?

For example, a rumour going around now is that Chicago's Jamal Crawford will be signed-and-traded with Jerome Williams and Eddie Robinson to the Knicks for Shandon Anderson, Othella Harrington, Dikembe Mutombo, and Cezary Trybanski.

I was under the impression that a player, when signed-and-traded, had to be the only one from that team being traded at the time.

Yes S&T packages are allowed.

Multiple players from a trade can't be traded immediately after but 1 can. Perhaps this is what you were thinking about?

Actually, more than 1 player from a trade can be traded immediately IF and only IF they are traded using different exceptions.

Example: 1 is traded using the assigned player exception while player 2 is traded using a trade exception.

''I told Jamal the situation is totally different,'' Paxson said. ''When Jay was selected with the second pick of the draft, all expectations were that he was going to be the starter.
''That's not the case this time around. Kirk's a complimentary player, although I do believe he'll be a starter eventually in this league.''

I didn't think this was allowed.

For example, I didn't think the Pistons would be able to package Okur with Hamilton for a certain player. If the Pistons wanted to S&T Okur, I thought it'd have to be only Okur for a player.

Lusty is right.

As long as $$$ issues (BYC status, proper exceptions, etc.) are dealt with properly and work for both teams, you can sign-and-trade a player in combination with other players.

What if a team makes and offer to a RFA, then that team matches the offer, can he still be dealt like a S&T with other players?

I guess this is for you So Cal.

Your the cap wizard!

Nope. Once a RFA signs an offer sheet with another team, the idea of a sign and trade is no longer an option.

The team giving him the offer sheet cannot sign and trade him because you can only sign and trade your own free agents.

His previous team cannot match and sign and trade either. Why? Because they are doing just that - matching the exact same contract offered by the other team. And since it is impossible for the other team to do a sign and trade contract, it is impossible for the team doing the matching to execute a sign and trade.

Once a RFA signs an offer sheet, the soonest he can be traded is either December 15th or three months after signing his new contract, whichever is later.

BTW, back to the original topic, did you all notice what happened last week? Orlando did a sign and trade Steven Hunter when they packaged him with Drew Gooden and the rights to Anderson Varejao in exchange for Tony Battie and draft picks. A good example of how you can add other players to a sign-and-trade deal.

Another example that such deals are allowed:

Yesterday, Philly did a S&T with Amal McCaskill, then sent him along with Derrick Coleman for Corliss Williamson.

Another example of that kind of trade SCBF would be the Gooden/Battie one.

The Magic S&T traded Steven Hunter in the trade along with Varejao and Gooden for Battie and a couple of 2nds.

BFreak.
