When is the new CBA ?
Labor deal article
It will interesting to see how it ends. BTW when do the current CBA end ? Next year ??
Some nice ideas, 4-year deal would be good if you can't have NFL type of contract IMO.

If I was the guys who were coming up as RFA's, I would sign for my contract now. Because I feel the CBA will be passed before it expires (the new one).
Yes the 4-year deals are much better and will improve parity. Teams will not be stuck with albatross contracts for the 6-7 years. Now you actually have to continue to play hard to gain your money.
They will most likely not have an age-limit and also will expand the NBDL.
I think this time the concession is going to have to be made by the players. If the players go on strike (or lockout), they have to realize they don't get paid. It doesn't seem like something many of them should want to do.

We already have a number of players whining about their teams, and if the 4 year contracts are introduced you have to wonder if we are seeing the death of a "franchise" player... ie a player whose name is associated with a team (Hakeem, Malone).

No it won't be the death of the franchise player. It will be the re-birth of more TEAMS.
Fiscal responsibility at some point has to come into play. Also guys getting fat and lazy on 4 year contracts are just not going to work. Think about this for a minute. If franchise players are only getting 4 year contracts, then other guys are getting 2-3 year deals, which means the level of effort in the NBA is about to shoot up. Guys have to be accountable to playing hard, that's what they are paid for. I think you will see more guys work hard on their games, because they have so much to lose (like not having a job in a year or two), if they don't step it up.
I really hope this is passed before next year's FA period. It would be better for the game.

I strongly agree with you about the players playing harder coz they'll have to prove themself more regularly, and if they don't . . . well then they'll be replaced sooner, you won't have to wait 6-7 years.
If the player is fits the team then obviously he'll get a contract extension, but Ming Bling gets a point too. Actualy you get it for him . What you say about the "other" players getting 2-3 years will obviously improve the number of transfers, trades . . . so i guess it can be harder to develop a good chemistry and from a marketing POV, to allow people to be identified with their favorite team.
The best would be that NFL contract, you could sign long term an get the players playing their *** off, but i'm just dreaming.

I know some want to identify with their players for decades, but people will get over it, when they know their team won't be mired in mediocrity for 6+ years because of albatross contracts.
Their is too much money at stake to go back to the old ways. Now you need to give guys more incentive, because even if the avg. person became rich, more often than not, they would rest on their laurels. Now that guys are playing for their security (team wise and financial wise), they will play harder.
I think this is a logical next step. It also gives players who are sick of being a bad situation (a team with bad management for example), a better option.

How many MAX-type players have really slacked off after they got the big bucks?
I can't think of too many off the top of my head.

How many have proven to be albatross' around the neck of the teams who signed them to those deals?
Penny Hardaway, Dikembe Mutombo, Vin Baker, Keith Van Horn, Grant Hill, Allen Houston, Juwan Howard, Terrell Brandon to name the recents.
They were all being paid more than 13 milion dollars a year. Ugh.
4 years would be better.
