salaries are out of control

Yes Salaries are out of control. I think it all started with Kevin Garnett's contract for 120 million. In Baseball, don't even get me started. Rookies get a crap load. If they restrict it more, then I think the college game will keep its players from going pro, and forth.

Owners make more money revenue every year. Therefore players deserve to make more money too.

Salaries would stop rising if fans stopped going to games once owners raise ticket prices. It doesn't happen, so they rise.

Don't fault the players because of it.

I agree, but the owners are rolling in the dough so who would you rather have making all the money the already rich owner or the players. Either way somebodies getting way too rich.

Ashamed of people liking the sport of basketball? I think not. Without the support of the fans basketball is nothing. The owners are the only ones who should be ashamed. If they wanted to they could lower prices of seats and food and in turn make less money and in turn giving out lower salaries. It ain't gonna happen though, because basketball is too popular in America. Players overseas make less money because the popularity isn't there, now compare those salaries to soccer (the main sport). I agree that basketball players and owners make too much money but I believe that there is not much that can be done about it.

I agree with ai21, man. The owners need to make it cheaper for the fans, so the players take less. It is simply pathetic that grown men are paid millions to play a game. At the peak of his contract MJ made $300 per second of play after taking his salary, versus time played. That is ridiculous. A top executive who arguably works harder, making 300 an hour at 40 hours a week would still be $504000 for 50 weeks work. And that's a lot, but MJ made 300 a second.

Sadly though, there is nothing we can do. Here's how it works.

A 50 person company makes 50 million. The owner gets 15 million. The 10 C level guys each get 1 mil. And then 40 people at a regular day job split 25 million.

That is how it works only in basketball, they make a few hundred million and split it in about 20 people. So what can we do?

Companies pay out what they make in proportion to the number of employees.

You have to remember, there is more to take into account than minutes logged in. Figure in training, practice, actual game time, traveling all over the country, etc. Really, it's a 24 hour a day job during the season.

Do you really think, that included, warrants the pay?

What about firemen who are on call 24 hours a day, have to be in peak physical condition as well, and have to drop what they are doing at the drop of a hat?

I'd kill to play in the NBA... It's a priviledge and they are overpaid, but since people like you and I go to games, buy merchandise and the like, they'll continue to get paid as such. I mean, after the 9/11 syndrome died off, how many firefire collectibles, merchandise have you seen bought? I bet not even a fraction of how many MJ jerseys have been purchased.

I'd go to a lot more games if the tickets weren't $500 a peice for decent seats. (at MSG). The league needs to bring the prices down, but they would only do that if people stop going. As long as people pay the money to go to games, and companies pay the big bucks to advertise during televised games, the amount of money is going to be high, and as such the pay will be high. Lets not forget that the CBA was largely put into place because player salaries were dominating the profits. The salaries will become lower as teams become more cash conscious, but don't expect them to drop out of the " I get paid an awful lot of money to play a game" range. I mean, how can you play professional sports if you don't have at least three different colored hum-V's?

Actually, no I don't. But the notion that an athlete barely works to receive the big pay day is utter BS. Athletes work there asses off, regardless of what they make. That was my point.
