Any link in regards to Salary Caps, Luxury Tax and Free Agency?

I just want to read up, in regards to teams over the cap, and what can they do if they were to trade for a Payton, Kandi, Brand, Odom, or anyone as such.

Thanks.

Look at the two links that are stickied first. Those pretty much will give you the gist of the CBA and what teams can and can't do with the cap, etc.

I'm semi-knowledgable, so if you post any questions, I'll do my best to answer and if not, request some professional assistance.

Well thanks RetroDreams for the offer, I read the above two links...

But the question I have is that if a team over the cap were to trade for a player such as Brand, what are their options to keep him after the season? Could they offer him the Max even if they are over the cap... I know the Larry Bird rights, but I am clueless on this situation. Seems like the Clippers have alot of players to trade, that is why I am wondering.

Thanks again.

Essentially, I think you're asking if Bird rights can be traded. The answer is "yes, they can."

So let's say that the Clippers trade Brand to Atlanta tomorrow for Jason Terry + filler. The Hawks will be over the cap this summer, but they can still sign Brand to a new deal up to the Max, because they would now own his Bird rights. Their options would be:

1) Sign Brand to a Qualifying Offer (1 year contract and let him become an Unrestricted FA in 2004)

2) Sign Brand to a new deal up to the Max (money and years) allowable under the CBA [This amount will be determined next July based on this year's revenue and projected revenue for 2003-04].

3) If they've offered the Qualifying Offer, they have the right to match offers that other teams make to Brand (as a Restricted FA).

4) Let him walk away as a FA.

Of course, all of this would also depend on what kind of deal Brand would be willing to sign.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does, if that is the case, and with alot of teams willing to part with stars, why isn't there a push for movement earlier before the deadline? I don't think that there has been a talented movable groups as Brand, Odom, Miller, Payton, Kandi (if he allows it), etc etc... Before it's too late, to get a spot. And why would teams think they are taking a chance if they are able to resign the players?
