Re: Team with the best
Those 3 will be together, and eventually get better, but don't assume those 3 alone would make San Antonio a contender, they still need to keep a legitmate depth chart in tact.

Re: Team with the best
The Spurs look pretty well off. Duncan makes the max, which is warranted, Parker might be slightly overpaid, but Manu is probably underpaid so that works out to about even. And just having those three through 2010 will keep them competitive, but they do need some role players around them. And that's where it could get a little hairy.
Rasho's contract is really bad. Other than that though, nobody makes too much and everyone seems pretty tradable. They may run into some problems in 07-08 when Horry, Finley, Barry and Bowen are all in their final year of their contracts. I'm guessing Horry will be retired, Barry will be pretty worthless and Finley might be a little over the hill too. But he's only making $3.1 million that year and Bowen has a team option for $4 million, which will depend on how well his lateral movement holds up on D. So they need to figure out how to replace these guys' current production a few years down the line, when most of their cap space will be going to the big three. It could be tough to replace all the role players since most are currently "bargains." It's gonna take some good drafting, but I'm pretty sure they'll manuever through this and find some guys that want to win some titles with Duncan, Manu and Parker.

Serves me right for trusting in my summation figures - which at the time were wrong - instead of looking at the direct data. You're absolutely correct in what you say, and my earlier statement was incorrect.
However, I'm still going to stick with Atlanta. The Hawks have more cap room today than the Bobcats do. Next year is next year and impossible to predict right now without seeing what the two teams do over the next few months.

The Spurs are set in terms of being a good team, but their financial situation isn't that great. They're over the expected luxury tax level for the next 2 seasons already and have $50Mil committed to 4 players in 08-09 and $45Mil committed to 3 players in 09-10. They have a great team, but their financial future isn't looking that good.

Actually according to the books the Suns turned the largest profit of any team last season. They still have one of the lower payrolls in the league this year too.

What books? Is there a website that gives a list of profits by team?

Re: Team with the best
tempe85 has the right idea.
From a business aspect what is the point in purely looking at how much a team spends on salary when you don't take into account the profit and assets they're bringing in? Without an idea on total revenue it's impossible to see who is in the best situation.
Then you need to take into account the costs besides salaries, such as maintenance, cost of running a stadium, etc., etc.. How about coaches, staff and managerial salaries? They all would need to be factored into the equation.
Financial situation should encompass far more than the teams salary cap situation in my opinion. For example, the Knicks bring in a lot more money than most other teams (Lakers too), thus they're able to afford more in salary too, Dolan helps of course.
A lot of you are looking at it far too 1-dimensional. There is far more to NBA teams than mere salary cap figures when it comes to revenue and costs.

Back in November (when I originally made my post) the most recent information was for the 2003-04 season. Now that the 2004-05 numbers have been released, yes, based on those numbers, my answers would change slightly. The Knicks now have the highest franchise value and the Suns had the highest operating income.

Yes, but not the highest assets if StoryTeller has the right info.
