Can the Grizzly trade Reeves' contract?

the end of an article from
knoxnews.com

Trade alters Grizzlies plans
By RONALD TILLERY
February 24, 2003
...
His job still is to improve the team's talent while untangling its foul salary cap situation.
So as the rebuilding plan moves forward with the idea of making the FedExForum allure mean more than just new lightbulbs and cushy seats, consider this:
Miller's contract is up, as is Swift's, after the 2003-04 season.
Wesley Person and Brevin Knight become free agents that same offseason, and the retired Bryant Reeves will no longer be attached to the Grizzlies cap.
Gasol and Shane Battier are due incremental raises that total just $2 million.
In short, the Griz still are poised to enjoy considerable flexibility with regard to the salary cap.
The flexibility is another season away.
But that's a good sign when you look at the past eight.
-------------------------------
What confuses me is this:
The trade checker on "the other site" permits trades of the contract of Hakeem but doesn't make the contract of Reeves available for trades. Why?

The Grizzly have players that appeal to me as a Bull fan. I like to play with trade ideas and that's why I'd like to know.

In any event it looks like the Grizzly will have a very enviable cap situation after next season.

TIA

That's Jerry West for ya!

Bryant Reeves contract that is just about as bad as the Pistons using the Grizzlies pick this year and all they had to give up was Otis Thorpe (like 4 years ago!) the Grizzlies GM before West was a *******.

I believe his contract was written off as an injury contract, whereas Hakeem's wasn't. Same thing that happened to Luc Longley and Larry Johnson's deals.

Not sure if that is in the CBA or a buyout type of deal with the league, team and/or players, etc.

Thanks Retro Dreams. Maybe I'll look at what the FAQ's say about that when I get time.

Sicky,

I've re-read the CBA to find the answer to your question and since his contract still counts against the cap, there are no restrictions on trading him.

The only reasons listed in the CBA on when a player can not be traded are:

- No trade clause

- For two months after receiving the player in trade, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This two-month restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. (Also see question number 63 for a special case where players can be traded together in less than two months.)

- When the trading deadline has passed.

- For three months or until December 15th of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent or draft rookie. (Note: This does not apply to players who sign contract extensions or who renegotiate their existing contracts. These players may be traded immediately.)

- When the player is playing under a one-year contract and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the contract.

- For one year after exercising the right of first refusal to keep a restricted free agent (however, the player can consent to a trade to any team except the team that tried to sign him).

- After claiming a player on waivers, for 30 days if the player was claimed during a season, or until the first day of the next season if the player was claimed during the offseason.

---

So, if he had a no-trade clause in his deal, then no... but if he didn't, he could be traded to work a deal for a team in need of cap relief, etc.

RetroDreams: Talk about going the extra mile; you went the extra marathon! I hope you did it for your own understanding. That took alot of time. I looked at it too but couldn't come to any conclusion. I actually thought your first response made more sense. I still wonder why the trade checker doesn't include it because they are usually very accurate. Anyway; thank you. The site is better for your efforts.

The links below are for Terrell Brandon who still hasn't been officially declared retired due to medical causes(and so it isn't the exact situation...yet (but still are related and interesting). I recommend them to get an understanding of why a team would consider trading for a player who will probably never play again.

Brandon still tradeable asset

Longley's big contract no longer a problem

I guess it's 2 years after the injury that it comes off the books since Luc was injured in 3/2001. Always wondered why his agent didn't get him a gig working for Outback Steakhouse.

Reeves retired in January of 2002 but I don't think he played any official games in the 2001-2002 season(only a couple of pre-season games I think), so it should be no later than January of 2004 but possibly earlier depending on when the league decides the injury happened. I think.

Big Country comes off the cap this summer for Memphis and since he has officially filed retirement paperwork he can't be traded. Hakeem hasn't filed the paperwork.

Also if Mike Dickerson retires his contract could come off this summer because it has been two years since his initial injury and he hasn't played 10 games since the original injury. However, at this time it seems that he will make another attempt to comeback and after one more game played the clock starts at another point.

MemphisX: Thanks. Weird that Hakeem can retire from the Raptor but not from the league.

A simple filing difference. Incredible.

I think West saw how the $ issues with the Grizzly would be rapidly improving and said "yeah sure I'll be your GM"! I can't blame him.
