Quick Question bout Salary Cap
How much does each team get a year to spend?
Like for example the Lakers...
This year they are spending 72 mill in salary, next year its 67 mill, year after is 42... how do I determine how much $$ they have to spend for salary?
Like in 08 season when they got 42 mill to spend, how much more can they spend on players etc...

Re: Quick Question bout Salary Cap
I think the cap is around 49-53 million. I'm not completely sure though, as I'm not an expert on the cap myself.

If you're after some bed-time reading, this will put you to sleep....

This will answer any lingering query you might have with regard to the cap and the new collective bargaining agreement. Very good stuff.
The cap is based on BRI- basketball related income. A set percentage of projected league revenues minus adjustments is taken to determine the salary cap for each team. For the current year, negotiations for the new Collective Bargaining Agreement dictated a set figure of 49.5 million as supposed to the aforementioned percentage of BRI.

Re: Quick Question bout Salary Cap
The cap will probably be around $49Mil. As for the $42Mil number, that's not including Bynum, Vujacic, or Cook if they want to excersize the team option them. I would think Bynum's would be for sure. Let's just say they pick up his contract for that season, which puts him at $44Mil or so. If the cap is at $49Mil, they'd be $5Mil under. But really they wouldn't have any more to spend than a team that has $100Mil in salary. Even if they renounced all their free agents, the MLE is a little over $5Mil so they'll just have that. Not sure if that makes any sense, but basically given their current roster they won't have any cap room in the 2007 offseason other than the $5Mil MLE and $2Mil BAE that everybody gets. If you want to read up on the CBA, the link Shabadoo gave is great. If you have some time I'd definately recommend reading it.

Re: Quick Question bout Salary Cap
I'm not bothering looking it up, but I believe under the new CBA, the cap is 51% of the BRI from the previous season which is up from the previous CBA resulting in a higher salary cap.

This season it is 49.5%, but afterwards it's 51%.

Re: Quick Question bout Salary Cap
I think it's just a raw figure of 49.5 million for 2005-2006, as supposed to the norma percentage of BRI method, which resumes next season....
Mr Coon says:

The league and Players Association agreed to use a figure of $49.5 million for the 2005-06 cap, rather than the calculated figure (which would have resulted in a salary cap of $50.9 million).

Re: Quick Question bout Salary Cap
Yes....the $49.5 million figure is just an arbitrary dollar ammount and not based on % calculations. They did it that way to quicken getting the CBA finalized before waiting for the exact data to come into the office....But like the last poster said, it was only about $1 mil less than it would have been anyway.

Actually they will have more money than that because Kwame Browns contract is a team option on the 3rd year which will surely be declined unless he turns into an All Star.
