Re: Salary cap ?

The salary cap is a numerical figure set by the league. Each team can make trades for players or sign players to contracts freely as long as the team total of salaries is below the salary cap.

For teams above the salary cap, players can only be signed or traded for if the team uses an exception - there are several of them.

If a team is far enough above the salary cap, it must pay a tax at the end of the year - this is commonly known as the luxury tax.

Here's a link to a big document written by Larry Coon.. It's the best source of information on the salary cap around.

Re: Salary cap ?

Thought I'd add that the salary cap exists so that wealthy teams can't just buy out the best players.

Re: Salary cap ?

The salary cap for this season (2005/06) is 49.5 million. Next season's cap figure will be determined in the early July after the league ran their numbers.

Re: Salary cap ?

the way i see it, the more money the clubs and the NBA is making the higher the salary cap will tend to be. This will be after a certain quota is reached by the clubs in the NBA....i heard it was going near 55-60 mil this year....
