I heard someone tell me that max contracts are 20% or 25% of the cap salary depending on how many years you've been in the NBA. But isn't the salary cap only 42.5 million? Am wrong about the 42.5 mil? or is that percentage just too low? if KG is making almost 20 mil something is not adding up.

See these two sections from Larry Coon's web-site. The first section describe the maximum salary rule, while the second describes an exception to this rule that applies to Kevin Garnett.
