I heard someone tell me that max contracts are 20% or 25% of the cap salary depending on how many years you've been in the NBA. But isn't the salary cap only 42.5 million? Am wrong about the 42.5 mil? or is that percentage just too low? if KG is making almost 20 mil something is not adding up.

Yes, he did. In fact, it was his contract that probably led to these maximum salary rules.

The website is not very clear about what the exact salary cap was for this past year and this up coming year. Was is 42.5 mil for this past season?

It was $40.271 million in 2002-03.
