I just recently read where the revenues were not much better than last year...the TV revenues were actually down and the only reason it was slightly above last year was due to the sales of throw back jerseys...expect the cap to be closer to 40mil than 42.

Yes, one of the more authoritative sources for what the salary cap may be next year is this Executive VP of the Clippers who recently did a Q&A.

http://www.nba.com/clippers/news/roeser_030625.html

He is claiming $40-$42 million, as well.

Also, I have been estimating the luxury tax threshold for 2002-03 at about $51 million, but recently I have run across information from a variety of sources that makes me think it might be above $53 million.

Two factors that might kick the cap up a bit:

1) Television revenue. You have to assume that the new deal gives the league at least a slight increase this year.

2) James and Anthony. Remember, the cap is based on expected revenues for the coming year - and you have to believe that the league will be promoting the heck out of these two new stars to try to jumpstart attendance figures, merchandise sales, etc.

But, yeah, I doubt it will be any higher than $42 million.

National TV revenues are supposed to increase by 3 percent or perhaps a bit less. However, the way the national TV deal is structured is likely to lead to lower local TV deals.

The salary cap is based up the national TV revenue plus 108 percent of non-national TV revenue from the previous year - with some adjustments if revnues came in too low in the previous year. James and Anthony will not have an effect on the salary cap until 2004-05. They will, however, affect the 2003-04 luxury tax threshold.
