Collective Bargaining Agreement???

When does it expire??

It seems to me that the salary cap in the NBA is not constructed very properly. How many teams have money to spend this off season on top tier free agents? 7 maybe

This seems a bit inappropriate. For granted, I like the player salary restrictions as deals like the one Garnett signed a few years back are ridiculous, however I for one feel that the cap level and ensuing luxury tax really prevent mid level teams from achieving a higher level unless they luck out in the draft. Boston falls in this category (partly because of personnel decisions i.e Vinny), but also because with our current roster, we will be stuck picking in the late teens, early twenties for a number of years.

I'd love to see a change in the way this agreement works or at least a higher cap level, instead of 42 mil, how bout' 48 mil?? There are only a handful of teams in the league that wouldn't exceed 42 million in player salaries if given the opportunity.

Were not as bad off as MLB in terms of parity (pesky Yankees), but the NBA certainly doesn't approach the parity in the NFL that we've seen over the last few years.

I'm moving this thread to the Salaries and CBA board so you might get a reply as I think you raised some valid questions.

The CBA expires after 2004 or 2005. Then they will make a new agreement. Your right about the salary cap having problems. But the real problem is all those overpaid contracts from before this was ever put into effect. Those contracts like the one Juwan Howard signed were ridiculious.

Now remember the TV contract plays a big part in the salary cap. It is heavily backloaded. So you will see the cap near 65 million dollars by the end of the TV contract with ABC/ESPN. Also with the increased revenue by adding Charlotte and it's apparel and Lebron James monetarily, you should see an economic boom for the NBA, which will definitely bring more money to the cap.

A team like Boston is messed up because Vin Baker and Antoine Walker are max players, but not max talents. This only show owners if you want to win, you can't overpay, and in turn this will force agents to lower their value for their clients.

This is one of the reason why I don't think Arenas is going to Denver, they are not going to pay him 9 million dollars, they will only pay him 7 million tops.
