He will account for $8 million on the Nuggets' salary cap next season, which includes his $6.4 million base salary and a $1.6 million bonus. Miller also dropped his second year salary to $5.76 million in order to give the Nuggets more more flexibility in another strong free-agent market next year.
|
Big Picture: Good work to use some of these year's cap to lower future year costs.
I think Nugz and Utah should try to get some nice reserves like Boykins signed to a deal for $8M this year and then $1M for the next few years. Then go for another big hit next year and keep the valuble reserve.
Details: For Miller's deal, to get to $51M, you would have to raise the 3rd year to roughly $7.75M and then give 12% raises.
So 8M, 5.75M, 7.75M and then standard raises for 3 years. Is this how everyone else intreprets this?

Increases or decreases can only be worth at most 10 percent of the value of the first year of the contract (12.5 percent for players who sign with their own teams).
So yes they have an $8 million salary cap hit this year, but next year's the hit is at least $7.2 million. (I have seen some speculation that it was a bit higher than $7.2 million.)
Yes, this is a very creative use of the CBA, but deals like the Boykin deal you mention are not legal under the CBA.

Hey that is pretty cool, didn't know FA could do that, good club planning.

Makes sense. That explains the lack of creativity. Teams are not given much room.
Back to Miller, the $5.75M next year compares to the $6.4M this year. You would still need to add in the 1.6M bonus.
So it would look more like this:
8, 7.3, 8, 8.8, 9.7, 10.6

Is his yearly raise based on the base (non-bonus portion) of his salary? If so, a 10% raise (or in the case of the second year, decrease) would be limited to $640,000 per year. In that case, his base salary would look like:
6.400
5.760
6.400
7.040
7.680
8.320
That's $41.6 million. Added to the $10 million bonus, that's $51.6 million.
Of course, each year $1.666 million of the bonus would be added to the base salary for purposes of determining yearly team salary.
