Q regarding the Houston-Utah

Here's the link:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory...bk/bkn/2129525

Here's the quote I want to discuss:

Quote:
The trade with the Jazz also gave the Rockets a $6.5 million trade exception, allowing them to take a player that makes as much as $6.5 million more than a player traded in any deal for the next 12 months.
What is this mean? Is there a rule that say you can trade $6.5 million free-cap to another team for them to use in future trades, eventhough they are over the salary cap? If it was Jazz trading their MLE this season (I'm not sure they have one since they are under the cap), then this statement probably should write like this:

The trade with the Jazz also gave the Rockets an extra $4.9 million in MLE money. Combined with the $1.6 million they have right now after the signing of Jimmy Jackson, they would have $6.5 million trade exception, allowing them to take a player that makes as much as $6.5 million more than a player traded in any deal for the next 12 months.

I am not sure this is remotely possible. The question is can we combine two team's MLE? If yes than we might have the real answer.

$6.5 is the difference between Glen Rice's salary - Jim Jacksons salary + John Amaechi's salary. What I don't understand is how they say it lasts a year and can be used during the upcoming offseason... They are still over the salary cap, but under the luxury cap.

Edit: Put Glen Rice in, accidentally left him out

Amaechi's salary was $6.4 million less than Rice's salary, which means that Houston received $6.4 million less in salary in this trade than they gave up. Thus, they get a traded player exception for $6.4 million plus $0.1 million = $6.5 million. They have up to a year to use this traded player exception to acquire other players worth up to $6.5 million.

However, this exception cannot be used to make up the difference between two players or two sets of players in a trade in the next year. It can only be used to acquire players for say a draft pick.

Thus, the quote above is wrong (or at least misleading), since it is not true that this exception "allow(s) them to take a player that makes as much as $6.5 million more than a player traded in any deal for the next 12 months."

Thanks for the reply NCBullsFan. This 'trade exception' thing is brand new to me.

I went through the FAQ again the saw this example:

Quote:
Here is a more complicated example of a legal trade using the traded player exception: A team has a $4 million trade exception from an earlier trade, and a $10 million player it currently wants to trade. Another team has three players making $4 million, $5 million and $6 million, and the two teams want to do a three-for-one trade with these players. This is legal -- the $5 million and $6 million players together make less than the 115% plus $100,000 allowed for the $10 million player ($11,600,000), and the $4 million player exactly fits within the $4 million trade exception. So the $4 million player actually completes the previous trade, leaving the two teams trading a $10 million player for a $5 million and a $6 million player.
So the 'trade exception' can be thrown into a large deal involving more than 1 player from either side of the parties. The bottom line is when we do the salary calculations, the amount from 'trade exception' must be within 10% of the other team's ONE (any one!) player's salary. There's no draft picks required.

These are so complicated...

Larry's example works because it really is two simultaneous trades.
