Question RE: Mutombo's new salary

OK, the Nets have bought out Dikembe's contract. My question is this - can he make any more than the minimum salary if he clears waivers (which he will)? According to Larry Coon's FAQ #53

FAQ regarding waivers

Any player who clears waivers is only paid the minimum salary (in Mutombo's case, $1.07 million). Is this an assumption or a requirement?

Plus, what about next year? Is he limited to the minimum salary next year as well?

I'm just curious......

My impression is that what you are discussing is being waived without a buyout.

With a buyout I don't think there are any restrictions on what a player can be paid, except for the restrictions (such as those due to the salary cap) that apply to all free agents.

Mutombo is in the same boat as Shawn Kemp. He was bought out, and sign a contract that was for more then the league min.

So... as NCBullsfan said, his new contract that is signed can be for any amount as long as it meets CBA regulations.

That was my assumption as well (and the media is definitely operating under that assumption). I just wanted to make sure that the assumption was correct. Thanks, guys!
