Question on Zo's contract

It has been reported that the Nets will get a salary relief for the last 3 years of Zo's contract. Does that mean it comes off the cap or? Rod Thorn said that Zo's condition was pre-existing, so the case is totally different (from an injury exception).

Basically I want to know what kind of options the Nets have in terms of being able to sign a FA or using the salary relief to compensate for any difference in salaries involved in a trade. Or maybe trade his contract to a team that is looking to clear its cap?

Thanks.

Looks like the moderators here are not doing their job.

You should know ZO's contract situation now Aurelino but in case anyone is still wondering, ZO's contract is fully guaranteed, which means the Nets will have to pay the 4-year remaining salaries they owe ZO. ZO's contract will count against the cap until two full years later. In this month 2005, ZO's remaining two years of salaries will come off the book if he never came back and the league 'officially agreed' he's retired.

I suppose the only exception the Nets will get is the 'Disabled Player Exception', which is half the amount of ZO's salary (actually it is half of the player's salary, or half of the MLE, whichever is less but in this case, it doesn't matter since ZO's getting MLE-type salaries). I doubt the league will grant this exception to the Nets however, since ZO's illness is well-known before he signed with Nets. If the Nets do get the exception, they can use it to sign only ONE player, or add it to a trade involve other players to balanced out the salary difference, kind of like a trade exception.

I don't think a disabled player exception can be used to "balance out a salary difference" in a trade of players from two different teams. I know that a trade exception cannot be used in that way.

I also suspect that the Nets would get an exception if they applied for it, but I doubt they will apply for it.

Hey, don't pick on the poor moderator. I heard that he was a good guy.

Thanks for pointing it out NCBullsFan. I actually made two mistakes. Here's a quote from Larry Coon's CBA bibble regarding the 'Disabled Player Exception':

Quote:
This exception can only be used to acquire one player. The maximum salary for the replacement player is 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less.
See details here .
