BYC kicks in when a player gets a new contract that gives him a 20% raise in the first year of the contract, compared with the last year of his old deal.
BYC status means that his team can only take in 1/2 of his contract value in trade.
BYC status only lasts for one year (ie, essentially for the first year of the new contract).
So, in Wally's case, his BYC status this year means that if Minnesota had traded him, they could only have taken in $4.167 million in matching salaries while sending out Wally's $8.333 million.
It doesn't really matter in his case, any more, now that the trade deadline has passed. His BYC status will be over this summer, and the Wolves could trade him without concern for BYC. I don't know if they'll get any takers, though.....
