How did Detroit get Hunter?

OK, Hunter was put on waivers by Boston yesterday. Detroit signed him today. But they don't have the $3+ in cap space to claim him off of waivers, do they?

Am I missing something here?

I am only speculating as to what might have happened here, but suppose no one picked him up on waivers. Then he is a free agent, and he can sign with any team. He signed a new (likely minimum salary) contract with the Pistons, so the now both the Pistons and Celtics are paying Hunter. With Hunter getting a new contract, the Celtics' costs are likely reduced somewhat, but not by the full amount of Hunter's new contract with the Pistons.

I appreciate the input, Dan! That would have been my guess, too, except that a player stays on waivers for 48 hours before he clears. Every report I have read (including the NBA.com Transactions page) indicates that he was only on waivers for one day. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I know that when Denver claimed Doleac off of waivers recently, they were able to do so because they have cap room. I'm just confused as to how Detroit was able to do so without any.

Maybe it's just that the reports have it all wrong about the day he was waived. Perhaps it was Tuesday and not Wednesday.

Whatever....it's not that big a deal, I was just curious....

From the reports I've seen in the Boston press, I'm sure Hunter was waived on Monday, or at the latest on Tuesday. So I think he was on for 48 hours and cleared. The Pistons already picked up a 200K fine in connection with the Wallace trade, and I'm sure they were careful to avoid another lol.

Yeah, I've now seen a Detroit-based report that says the same thing. I'm inclined to believe that he was waived earlier in the week, which clears up the confusion.

Interesting, though, that national reports (ESPN, AP, etc.) - as well as NBA.com's transaction page - had the date as Wednesday.

Thanks for the info. Big John!
