I was reading on a Pistons message board today and there was a trade proposal with Lindsey Hunter involved. They wrote "This trade would work after Hunter's trade restriction ends May 26." What does this mean?

Hunter was signed as a FA by Detroit on 2/26 after Boston waived him and he cleared waivers.

The rule for trading recently signed FA's is this - a player signed as a FA cannot be traded for 3 months or until December 15th of the season, whichever is later.

In Hunter's case, the 3 month rule applies, meaning that he cannot be traded until 5/26.

It makes sense, but Hunter is a free agent after this season. So could he still be traded?

Aha, now I see what you're saying.

Yes, you're correct that a pending FA cannot be traded. If Hunter accepted a one-year deal from Detroit, then he could only be traded this summer through a sign-and-trade deal, which doesn't make any sense for a minimum contract player.

However, if Hunter accepted a multi-year offer from Detroit (maybe with a team option for 2004-05), then he could be traded, but not until after May 26.
