Kenny Anderson

Apparently, the Sonics are willing to eat some of his contract. Does this apply in a trade (thus lowering the amount of salary the Sonics would have to receive back in order to trade him), or does it only apply if he's waived?

My understanding is that any kind of buyout agreement between Anderson and the Sonics only applies if Anderson is waived. A buyout cannot be used to reduce Anderson's salary for trade purposes.

I think the buyout only applies if he clears waivers. If a team chooses to pick him up off waivers they would pay and apply to their salary cap his original contract not the buyout.

This is not quite right, according to my understanding of the CBA.

If a player is waived (without a buyout) from team A and signed by team B, whatever team B pays the player is deducted from what team A is charged for the player.

Example: Seattle owes Anderson $9M, but waives him. Orlando signs him for $1.5M. Anderson would count for $7.5M for Seattle and $1.5M for Orlando. Anderson would be paid $9M.

If a player is waived with a buyout, that player costs his original team the amount of the buyout regardless of what the player signs for.

Example: Seattle owes Anderson $9M, but buys him out for $8M, then waiving him. Orlando signs him for $1.5M. Anderson would count for $8M for Seattle and $1.5M for Orlando. Anderson would be paid $9.5M.
