Kevin Durant Interview
March Madness, cold-blooded shooting, and Entourage.
Kevin Durant's favorite TV show might be Entourage, but that doesn't mean he sees himself as the next Vincent Chase. "Chris Wilcox is the Vinnie Chase of the Sonics for sure," Durant tells me when I ask him to recast the show using his teammates (is it just me or does Wally Szczerbiak make the perfect Johnny Drama?). "I'm not Vince at all. Chris Wilcox, if you're around him for as long as I've been around him, you can tell he's Vince."
And while Durant doesn't see himself going Hollywood anytime soon, the kid who was just named Rookie of the Month in November not only finds himself point central in the NBA spotlight, but as the cover boy of EA's new basketball game, NCAA March Madness 08.
"I just thought it was something that was cool to see some of the best players on the covers of these games," Durant tells me over the phone as we talk March Madness and life in the NBA. "Growing up, you always wonder who is going to be on the cover of this game or that game, so every year it was kind of a mystery for me and my friends. I still remember my favorite one was NBA Live 2001 with Kevin Garnett on the cover."
Durant has been a gamer since he can remember. Only thing that's changed is the size of his TV screen. "The home theater is one of the best inventions of all time," he says. "It's my favorite thing in the house." Now dunking a ball in a game like NBA Live, Durant sees his character in almost life-sized form. And when he's not shooting baskets, the rookie scoring leader is taking shots at Triads and the Russian mob in Stranglehold, a game he says is like living the life of a John Woo action flick. "If I'm in the mall, I always stop by GameStop and see what new games they have," says Durant. "I was going to buy Guitar Hero but I don't know if I can play that. I'm looking at getting Rock Band too. I'll have my cousins over to form the band. I know they'll want to play."
When not keeping his fingers busy lighting up the 360, Durant has been showing those flashes on the court that have people calling him the perfect blend of T-Mac and K.G. The youngster they call K-Smoove is already averaging over 20 points per game (not to mention already netting 35 against the Pacers) and recently hit his first game-winning three to beat the Hawks in double OT. I guess there's a reason Durant refers to his game as cold blooded, especially when it comes to finishing games.
"I think with me, before I wasn't really like that. I was scared to take shots like that, but I just tried to tell myself in those situations that the worst thing that could happen is missing the shot and losing the game. If that's the worst thing that could happen, if you tell yourself that, all that pressure will just go away. Not in a bad way or anything like that, but I really don't care. I think that helps too, not to think about it and just let whatever happens happen. Like I said, not in a bad way or anything like that, but I just don't care and that helps."
One of Durant's favorite cold-blooded moments came back in Texas in a classic game against Texas A&M.
