Looking Down the Road....
So it's absolutely certain now that the Sonics are soon going to in Oklahoma, leaving behind a scattered and confused fanbase. Steve Ballmer has offered to help fund half the arena, but Bennett would rather have the free arena in Oklahoma. That's understandable.
So this leaves Ballmer hanging. I don't know what everyone thinks, but I feel that if the CEO of Microsoft wants a basketball team, he will damn sure get a basketball team. Seattle is one of the richest cities in America, and there are so many potential buyers that it's hard to picture us without a team for long.
On Wednesday's (or Tuesday's) Seattle Times, Steve Kelly wrote a scathing attack to the team about the 50+ point loss where the Sonics gave up 168 points to Denver. He said they were a disgrace, and they're not worthy of their uniforms. He said they've insulted every Sonic great from Jack Sikma, Fred Brown, Spencer Haywood, to Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. He said it wasn't bad defense- it was no defense.
Basically, he mad.
And I agree with him. The Sonics are a disgrace right now. Our point guard play is mediocre. Our 'savior', Durant, is a low percentage shooter and bricks just about everything. Jeff Green, our other rookie, hasn't been notable since the first month of the season. Damien Wilkins' mediocrity has been a staple of this season. Our big men suck balls. Collison is a great role player, but he’s wasting his time on this team. The only thing I find exciting anymore is the inconsistent play of Wilcox. He gets those nice looking dunks once in a while.
The Sonics are unwatchable. This might be their darkest time yet, but let's not kid ourselves- the Sonics are a terrible franchise. We haven’t made a good draft choice (except for the obvious Durant pick) since we picked Luke Ridnour over Reece Gaines in 2002. We draft three centers in a row. Robert Swift is an injury-prone bust. Johan Petro averages about 4/3. Saer Sene is going to be a project for the rest of his career. Keep in mind by picking those three players, we passed up on Al Jefferson, Jason Maxiell, and Ronnie Brewer. Our greatest center of the past decade is Kurt Thomas. Do the timeline. Kurt Thomas – Johan Petro – Robert Swift – Jerome James – Vitaly Potepenko – Calvin Booth – Peja Drobnjak – Olumide Oyedeiji – Jim MacIlvaine – Sam Perkins. Sam Perkins was 1998. The saddest part about this? It’s true.
With the exception of that playoff year (which happened to be a contract year for half the roster), we have been in mediocrity for the past half decade and more. Until the Durant pick, we have always been the team that doesn’t have a chance in the playoffs, but we didn’t have a chance at getting a top pick either.
Ever since the 1996 Finals, this team hasn’t been built to win. With the declining Payton years, we had a respectable backcourt of Payton and Brent Barry, but our frontline was the inexperienced Rashard Lewis, an underachieving, lazy, and defenseless Vin Baker, and the magnificent Jim McIlvaine. Yessir.
Then after that, it was Ridnour, Allen, Lewis, Evans, and Jerome James. Rick Sund built the team with a defenseless backcourt, scorers from the wing positions, and absolutely nothing from the big men. We were simply built the wrong way.
Then now, we have these clowns. Their performance isn’t making us miss them. Matter of fact, I want these guys gone from this city. The sooner this disgrace of a roster leaves town, the sooner we can start concentrating on getting another team. Regardless of what David Stern says, there are simply too many buyers here for us to not have a team.
So I decided to make this thread for the Sonic fans. What are your plans once they leave? Any thoughts about this situation?
