Don't really want to start a specific thread, so I'll start this, and open it up to anyone who actually still checks this place.
I do a Draft every year on another forum (actually got the idea from here, but took it elsewhere) where we have 20 players with every footballer in the world in the pool. Last year we did 25 rounds for a total of 500 players. I think I did a phenomenal job last season, although sadly I think a couple of my players emerged more THIS season (I actually won the whole thing, but it was close, so I guess I shouldn't complain). This is what I threw out in the Finals
If I could do it over again, I'd switch Reus and Muller, and drop Muller for Valencia who was on my bench.
Anyway, I think Ronaldo and my offense carried the team, but I just want to build from the back this year. So that's why I'm asking you guys the best way to build a team starting with defense.
The way I see it, as far as first rounders go, most people take attackers. This was the first round a year ago:
Now, despite the major focus on central defenders, I actually think that elite fullbacks are the most important picks that I can make (aside from Messi and Ronaldo). The dropoff from Dani Alves to even Bacary Sagna is massive. Ditto for Lahm to Marcelo. I'm prepared to draft Alves and Lahm with my first two picks.
After that, I wonder. The first thing is that I really really really want Javi Martinez to be one of my defenders. That dude is amazing, modern libero. Next to him I'd need a monster, like a Vidic ideally, or Silva or Terry. Anyone with thoughts here? Should I wait on one or both of these guys? How high would the pick have to be for me to abandon this strategy and draft an attacking player in the first round? JUST Ronaldo and Messi? Or including RvP/Cavani/Rooney/Robben/Ribery?
The FINAL thing I noticed is that central midfielders seem to be the easiest players to find, followed by wingers. Global superstars (obviously) and fullbacks are the most difficult.
